Read somewhere that if you have a cd rom sharing your ide cable with your hard drive, it slows its speed . Have LS120 floppy on cable with hard drive. Is this why I drop frames using pic mjpeg? Am running 900 Athlon, with a 5400 hard drive.

sharing an ide cable will only slow your captures if you are using the other device at the same time. most likely, your computer isn't fast enough to encode picvideo's mjpeg. depending on quality settings and image size, you might want to try using lower compression rate.

If your capturing in Virtual Dub while you are capturing look at the cpu status how many percentage is it reaching if it's 100% cpu utilization then it's probably means your cpu is not powerful enough maybe try using a smaller resolution or use uncompressed or a different codec.

I have an Athlon 900 - I'm using a western digital 20 Gig 5400rpm as my PRIMARY SLAVE to an 8Gig Maxtor - I have my DVDROM and CD Burner on the Secondary IDE channel.
However - I think you'll notice that when capturing with PIC MJPEG codec, that you will drop frames if you try to capture with the quality set all the way to 20. Try dropping it down to 19 and i bet you wont lose frames. And the difference in quality is barely noticeable.
I capture 720 x 480 at 29.97 fps without losing frames.
Oh dear. This calls for a very special blend of psychology ... and EXTREME VIOLENCE.

It's generally best to sepp. all of your devices as much as possible when it comes to your ide channels. Especially when there are cpu intensive apps running
I have a RAID motherboard so I split all of my devices:
IDE0 master 20gig ata/100 boot drive
IDE0 slave 4gig used for swap space
IDE1 master CD-RW
RAID: striped together, OS sees a 60gig drive.
IDE2 30gig ata/100 data
IDE3 30gig ata/100 data
(For those not familiar with RAID: striping puts the drives together into an array. Anything writen to the array is shared between the drives. This means that, of your 2gig avi file, there's one gig on each drive. This means that, when you access the avi file, your accessing it through two channels instead of one. 200meg instead of 100meg. And two drives instead of one, 7200RPM X 2 instead of one. Cool huh?)
All my drives are 7200RPM. If you can find 10,000RPM IDE drives, get those. I put alot of stock in I/O bandwidth and find it's worth my while. Not to bash anyone, but 5400RPM drives suck. Check out http://www.dirtcheapdrives.com and go to thier controlers section.
