Hmm.. don't know if this has been asked but...
I'm looking to buy a really cheap system and I'm wondering which CPU should I go for (all things being equal). I guess celerons are probably out since they're likely to suck at this. I wanna do dvd-to-dvd or dvd-to-svcd copying and the like so should I go for AMD or Intel CPUs? Keep in mind I only plan on buying a cheap (~$100 - $150) CPU.
Are there also performance differences in within each group in the make of CPU (e.g. cupertino)?
Thanks.

Currently, new Intel CPUs are far better any AMD solution.
But for the price you can offer, AMD is the best solution IMHO.
For 100 - 150$, buy an athlon xp @2600/2700 or even 2800. -
I have a AMD XP2100+ processor on a msi MS6378 M/B, with 512 mb of ram. So far it seems to be a fairly good combination, however it does get HOT without a big fan blowing into the side of the machine. It may not be a problem if you live in a colder environment but in tropical north queensland it's a bit of a problem. My next computer will probably be an intel 2.4ghz with a 800mhz FSB, if only for the cooler chip (as in temp)

Oh yeah, also when you get the machine Windows XP would be the best choice, going by all the reports on this forum. I have WinME which I really need to update, but just can't seem to afford it at the moment.

My 2 cents: Intel
My 2 bucks: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=162292
The most stable OS for video production is Windows 2000.I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -
For ripping it makes no difference,it's more important how your Hard Drive is setup. For programs like DVD2ONE clock speed matters,a 1.6Ghz Intel will convert at the same speed as a 1.6Ghz AMD. For conversion,CCE or TMPEG,I would give the edge to AMD at the same actual Ghz.

It really depends on how much money you have to spend on the system. Currently high end P4s will outperform way better than the high end AMDs. I am talking about 2.6 ghz and up. In the lower end segment, less than 2.4 ghz, AMD's give a much better value. I'm just reminding you the numbers that you see, are not mhz ratings. Its supposed to be just a product code. However, by "coincidence" the product code more or less performes to a P4 of that speed.
It still depends on how you set up your system though. You have to consider prices of all the parts. Its funny when I see people spending all their money on a processor and then the rest of the components are crappy or low performance parts. It ends up being a crappy system and they wonder why.
