  1. Well, can't seem to get it right, tell me what the problem is.

I have a new TDK dual format burner (404N I believe), downloaded DVDecrypter and DVDShrink (the newer version, 2.3.. I believe), and already have Roxio Platinum 5 (latest update installed). The process is DVD9 to DVD5.

Project1: Used DVDecrypter and ripped to the HD, then used DVDShrink, then Roxio using DVD data method. I made sure that the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories were set up. Checked the Region Free box in DVDShrink. I burned a TDK DVD+R. The DVD plays on my computer but not on my Panasonic RP-82 DVD player. The RP-82 definitely plays DVD-R per the specs and is reported to play DVD+R's.

Project 2: Same as above using TDK DVD-R. Same result; works on the computer, not on the RP-82.

Project 3: Ripped using DVDShrink only, then burned a DVD-R. Same result, plays on the computer, not on the RP-82.

Project 4: Same as Project 3 except in DVDShrink, I unchecked the Region Free box and checked off all of the regions. Same result, plays on the computer, not on the RP-82.

So, me and the coasters are singing the blues. What's the problem?

  2. I suspect the problem is Roxio, one of the most obnoxious pieces of crap out there (whatever happened to Easy CD -- sigh, that sure went down the toilet) but you need to go back to troubleshooting 101: that is, you first need to make sure you can burn *any* DVDR that will play. Forget about ripping and shrinking, etc. Just author a little test (hopefully with +RW) and get it to play on your standalone (this may involve switching burning software -- for sure I'd try either Record Now or Nero).

You can use any authoring software for this (I'm sure something came with your drive) but there are also lots of demo products around for this purpose (dare I mention DVDLab?).

Once you've determined you can burn properly, then you can move on to the other issues (although if your DVDShrinked movie plays off your hard drive properly, the odds are you have good data there).

  4. OK, would you suggest Nero Express or Nero Burning Rom? I assume Express is easier but will it do as good a job?

  5. haven't used express yet for dvd or anything for that matter but i hear it does dvd's just fine. make sure you're not burning a multidisc either when you do it....if you use nero, make sure you have the latest version, i've had some problems with anything pre 5.5.10.x...

  6. OK, now were getting somewhere. I ripped and burned a single layer DVD using DVDecrypter only, using ISO mode. I burned both a +R and a -R and they both worked on my Panny RP-82. Now I'll try to rip and burn a dual layer DVD. This time, I'll use Nero for the burn.

I use Nero Express exclusively. It is the easiest to use, and works like a charm everytime. Just take all the files that DVD shrink makes after ripping/encoding, and drop them in the Nero Express add files window. Choose next, then burn. No need for any other mods.
