    Hi:

I'm having a hard time with my Windows Movie Maker.

I've tried looking on the web for Windows Movie Maker but can't seem to find it anywhere. I wanted to uninstall the one that I now have on my computer and reinstall it. Yes, I know you have a page with information about WMM but unfortunately that page isn't helpful because the version you mention is referring to the version used by Vista and since I don't have Vista it's of no use to me. Also I might mention that the page it takes you to doesn't have a direct download link. That page just tells you that the software is installed with Windows XP Service Pack 2.

So, is there a program that's simliar to Windows Movie Maker or maybe better but also free???

As for a free program that encompass's all that windows movie maker can do , no , only a combination of freeware can combine all functions .

Yet removing such an integral component , one from the os , will represent issues .

  3. Jeez, a google search for "windows movie maker download" turns up Richard_G's link at the very top. How hard was that?

Listen if you don't want to help...don't. I don't need your sarcasm.

Furthermore if you had read my message you would have realized that I mentioned the Richard_G's link even if I didn't mention it by name. I said that I went to that page and the WMM link listed was for Windows Vista users.

I just don't understand people like you. Are you having a bad day or are you always this unkind??? As I said before you can't be helpful and give positive feedback to a legtimate question/dilemma then don't reply at all.

    Thanks,

I don't know if I'm savy enough to use that the information you gave. I don't want to make a mistake and screw things up but thanks for the information though.

What various software would you suggest?

I found information about how to use WMM and I even found some WMM creativity packs. As I writing my reply to the various messages I did some other searchs using other search engines. The reason I didn't do that in the first place just in case someone might ask is because I was in the middle of using WMM when it started going nuts and I just wanted to find a place to down load it and get what I was trying to do done. So anyway, I opened a few others tabs on IE 7 and did a search using various search engines. Most of links I found and tried only have that same link to microsoft.com which DOES not have a download feature for WMM on that page. One of the searches I did happened to turn up an real software download of WMM at Download.com. http://www.download.com/Windows-Movie-Maker/3000-2194_4-10187903.html?tag=lst-0-1

I want to thank all of you that replied with positive feedback. I really appreciate your assistance.

It says Windows XP all over the page, even in the URL.

    Coalman:

Appartently you CAN'T download it from THIS page either since it's only available according to Microsoft, when downloading XP SP2.

    But thanks for your help.

I'm just trying to point out that it is for XP because you keep stating its for Vista which it is not. We like people to help themselves around here, and you obviously have not done your homework and copping an attitude when someone provides relevant information isn't going to get you very far. Doing a Google search for "reinstall movie maker" will bring you to numerous pages that give directions for reinstalling. There is no file to download that I'm aware of.

Note that you will also find useful information on many of those pages as to why its crashing to begin with, most likely a reinstall is not going to fix your problem.

Start here: http://www.papajohn.org/ Look under the left under problem solving.

Note that all the bove information I've given you was gathered in about 2 minutes using Google.

You have to have SP2 for the later version of WMM. The original version with SP1 was even more limited. I have an install for WMM2 sitting on my hard drive if you want me to PM it to you. I downloaded from the link I sent you.....

Cant tell from pc specs , but ...

    Out-of-Date Version of C-Media Cmaudio.ax Driver File : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q317358

You may want to stick your os cd in and try running this command

    sfc /scannow

Do not run that command without the cd ... it will drive you nutts .

As a last resort you might beable to update it via : http://www.soft82.com/download/Windows/Windows_Movie_Maker (wmmv2)

    ----

As for freeware that might cut the mustard , for almost anything you could ever want to create .

    Wax2 + addon < thems transition affects
    Virtualdub + filters
    Avisynth + addon filters
    Bbmpeg , quenc , henc = mpeg2 encoding
    Vobsub filters
    Ac3filters
    Besweet
    Ifoedit
    Imgburn
    dvdslideshowgui / ssmm
    Dvdauthorgui
    Visualsubsync
    Audacity
    Blender
    Gimp
    Dvdfabhddecypter
    Pgcedit
    Vobedit
    Vobblanker
    Pgcdemux
    Dvdshrink
    Fairstars cd ripper
    Mpeg streamclip
    Batchdemux
Codecs (only install those you need) ... avoid codec packs .

My personal choice is > install > abuse > get the heck out , Im done .

Then we get into another group of utilities ... later maybe , its all good freeware .

    Commercial :

    Sony vegas + dvdarchitect
    Ulead video studio (various versions)
Nero express (highly unreliable at conversions)

About the only groups I have nothing to do with are :

    Dvdlab
    Tmpgenc
    Adobe
And some microsoft junk , like photostory (less ms junk , the faster pc gose) .

Crap , I forgot super in all that ... good at breaking the back of files that are stuborn , and wont convert ...

    Bjs:

Thanks for your assistance with the various programs! I have a few of them but will check out some of your other suggestions. Also thanks for the links to download WMM2(I found one on Download.com).

I found this site http://www.desilucy.com/index.php?lvl=2 which helped me understand the syptoms of the problems I was having and helped me with a solution. I reinstalled SP2, thus reinstalling WMM 2.1 as well as copying a missing dll codec to the WMM folder and all is well.

    Thanks again!
