I'm guessing your using TMPGenc. Try a different encoder, like CCE, or Main Concept.

    Which encoder are you using?

As for your audio, you can convert it however you like. Leave it in, leave it out. It's more of a personal preference than a rule of thumb. If your audio is intact, and the length won't change (say from a DVD rip), then there is no need to re-encode it. Just multiplex it back in when your done. If it does need to change (say for a DVD to SVCD conversion), then you can work the audio seperately, or let the encoder handle it during the conversion. Again, just do whichever method your most comfortable with.

Encoding times vary on the settings and filters you are using in the program. I have a similar spec pc and mine will encode a non standars vcd with a higher bit rate in vitually real time.

Check and see what you have set in the advanced tab.
Or use another program, dvd2svcd is good and dvd2dvdr is really good.
    CCE in required though.

  6. If you are using alot of filters then that can really slow things down. Also if you do 2 pass VBR.

    CCE, http://www.cinemacraft.com/index.htm

Expensive. The SP version is $1,950.00.
The Basic version is $58.00 (Good Deal).

You can find some CCE specific guides on www.doom9.org. You can also find a few here in the GUIDES section. Use the 'Search by: Tool search". Select 'Cinema Craft Encoder Basic' to get you started.
