  1. I recently bought a box of 10 TDK DVD-R disks with the smily guy on the front.

I also have a set of disks which I believe are older again TDK DVD-R with the swirly pattern on them.

I use DVD It to create a DVD folder and write it to the DVD-R media using Prassi.

When I write to the smily guy TDK Disks non of my players will read it. Only my DVD-Rom drive in the computer will. However, if I burn it to the DVD-R disks with the swrly pattern it works perfectly.

    I have a Pioneer DVR-103.

Any Ideas. I expected TDK to be fairly consistent. I updated my drive to the latest firmware (2.00) tried writing at 2x and 1x but to no avail.

    Thanks.

No I THINK it was a 2x drive... maybe, guess I should look it up.
Yes shows to be a 2x drive. Speed wasn't the difference between the A03 and A04. Drive size and interface stuff is what was changed.

TDK was the first manufacturer whose name was pirated by offshore cheap (RE: lousy) knock-offs. It was "chosen" because it was one of the first manufacturers to make 2X disks reliably, and also was certified by Pioneer as 2X.

Last year, TDK told me that they did NOT sell blank DVD-R disks in 100 piece spindles, which even today is widely available on eBay (so, those are likely pirates).

I recently purchased a "house branded" spindle of disks (with the TDK name in the PRERECORDED INFO AREA), which were total crap - and which I sent back. So, it appears that the REPACKAGING HOUSES are now using these cheap pirate disks.

True TDK disks are superior disks. The TDK pirate disks are truly inferior disks. I guess that it is CAVEAT EMPTOR.

  5. As far as I have seen, TDK -R 2x is only sold in 15 and 40 spindles. Of course when I ordered the 40 pack from even a reputable internet site, it was backordered and they sent out a no-name (no label) knockoff (only said TDK thru DVDInfo.

  6. Newer TDK discs are made by Maxell not TDK.

  7. I hear that Maxell's are even better than TDK (according to compatability charts) so that isn't necessarily a bad thing???

  8. I never said it was a bad thing. I currently use the newer breed of discs for my more vauable back ups. I consider them about the same.
