  1. Oki...got the above card a few weeks ago.....real pain in the arse to get it running, but got there in the end.My mission is to capture movies from VHS and tv episodes from Satelite(I am UK based)....here is what i got so far....
Using the included tools......sorry but they are crap...I done my research see
Using Virtualdub......Cool,using Huffy i get good quality captures with very few dropped frames, can only capture at 320x240 though. Also, for some reason,Tmpgenc crashes my system,so I can't convert to VCD(my prefered format).Instead i use Virtualdub to encode to divx 4.
Using PowerVCR.....Nice bit of software, tried a few custom profiles, but can't really get the right combination of quality/size/resource use. Also,as i invariably end up with large files, and encoding with Tmpgenc is not an option,I can only reencode to Divx .
The whole Tmpgenc crashing problem is down to some kind of hidden protection on my puter i think. The software runs the proc at 100% fro about 10 minutes and then the puter restarts.Don't get that problem with any other s/w though.

Anyway.....thats the score so far...any advice would be great.

    Oh yeah....I am running winxp pro + sp1...xp1800+ proc...768mb ddr...120gb maxtor 7200...Soltek SL-75DRV5 Mobo...SB live 1024...geforce 2 mx200...

Oh,and also,i run the audio feed direct into my soundcard,w/o looping through the TV card...is that right?I mean, while looping through, the sound kept turning off .....

    Hehe,thnx in advance

I have used the AverTVStudio for over 2 years and I capture to DVD compliant Mpeg2 to burn to DVD later if needed.I don't find the need to capture to avi then convert.Your spec is better than mine and you should get very good VCD compliant files with PowerVCRII or DVD Movie Factory.
I found that capturing my VHS with Power Director produced the best DVD compliant picture(also tested AverTVStudio application and PowerVCRII)I usually use PowerVCR to capture digital satellite(Sky)but PowerVCR doesnt like the Nicam tuner(no audio) so for terrestrial broadcasts I do use the Aver app.

  3. nice.....which profile do you use in powervcr??Also,i have to convert as i don't have a dvdwriter.....but converting to avi with virtualdub is no biggie,as tmpgenc still don't work.
    Thnx for your help though

    silver101,
    Try mainconcept or CCE encoder.
Personally I like mainconcept even more than tmpg.
The fact that tmgenc has problems suggests that your windows is screwed, so you can also try to reinstall windows from scratch.

  5. Nice one...I will check them out.
As for me having windows problems,i think that is the case also.I have only recently reformatted and put on SP1 with my winxp. But also the tv card is new,and most of my problems seem to be related to the tv card (like problems running tv capture software etc...).
I cannot be bothered to reformat yet,but i will try out those bits of software you suggested.
    Thanx again

  6. Like Steve, mine also captures great into MPEG2 which I later burn onto dvds. For VCD quality capture I like to use Studio 8, output to avi, then use TMPGEnc to encode to MPEG1. The Aver solfware and Studio 8 have poor quality MPEG1 encoding so I would try to get TMPGEnc working again.

I have an AverMedia TV Stereo. I use the btwincap drivers and iuvcr to record either via the tuner or s-video in to huffyuv or to dv. Reimaging your machine and getting the drivers working is the key. The problem is often attributed to the bt878 chipset or the drivers but it generally is user error, irq conflict or a corrupted registry.

I use IUVCR (free 30 day trial) and it performs flawlessly for me. VDUB never works for me. Zero dropped frames with my card, up to 720x 480(576 for PAL) resolution.
