VHS to DVD capture - what resolution...

I wish to convert a few VHS tapes to DVD. I know the mechanics as I've been doing CVDs for over 2 years now.

I'm currious if it would make any difference to capture the AVIs (Virtual VCR & Huffyuv compression) at 720x480 and convert to a DVD mpeg using Tmpgenc at 720x480

OR

Capture at 640 x 480 and convert to DVD at a resolution of 352x480. The source will be regular VHS tapes and a few store bought VHS movies...

I will be using DVDiT PE 2.5 to author.

I asked this question awhile ago and got the following answer:

"NTSC is definitely 720x480, capturing at 352x480 will give a significantly duller picture. If possible ALWAYS capture at 740x480 you can always resize later. Some say it overkill to cap at 720 for VHS but I disagree. Capturing at 740 will ensure you get the full bandwidth your input is capable of receiving, regardless of the source. I personally can see a dramatic increase in quality on all capture sources."

Well, I have tried it both ways with the same short clip from a VHS tape.

I would agree with the original poster, capturing at 720x480 gives a brighter picture and a cleaner conversion to Half-D1 format.

I capture directly to DVD compliant mpeg2 at 720x480 resolution then use NeoDVD Plus to make the DVD files and then use DVD2one to get the files onto a single DVDR. This works very well for me and is the fastest way I have come up with to produce the best quality.
