After doing a few capturing projects, my hard disk (dedicated to video) becomes very fragmented. But it takes a number of hours (4-5 hours!) to defragment it. So what I have been doing is copying any files on it temporarily to my other drive and then formatting the video drive. This only takes about 45 minutes. Will this achieve the same thing as defragmenting it? Will this constant formatting of the drive damage it?
Thanks for your help, as always!

There isn't a practical difference between reading/writing and de-fragmenting your drive. If anything, defragmenting moves the most sommonly accessed files around, preventing uneven wearing.
My dedicated video drive get's wiped and formated about every other week, makes it real simple. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
If you want a VERY GOOD Defrag program, use DISK KEEPER 7. It is far better than Windows rubbish and also alot quicker. Try it you won't look back.

I use the Norton tools as well as the Windows ones and both just seem to take forever to defrag....
