VCD aspect ratio

My DVD-player does not play the entire VCD picture, it leaves out about 5% both right and left in the picture.
Does anyone know why?
Neither the DAR, VCD-resolution nor the TV settings makes any difference. I have tried both PAL and NTSC.

How about the settings on your tv 16:9, 4:3, zoom, s-zoom, best fit ?

It does not matter I have tried 4:3, 16:9 and best fit. It still cutts about 5% of each side.
The VCD plays properly in my CD-ROM.
JVC says its related to the VCD not the hardware but I'm not convinced since it works great on my computer.

It is called overscan. All TVs have about 4-5% overscan. It can be different for vertical and horizontal also. If you want the entire picture on your tv you can add some black borders.
