i thought i was pretty hep to the capturing and ripping of dvd's.. but recently i was looking over dvd standars (i was bored, and i'm a nerd for the stuff).. this really caught my eye.. here is an excerpt from my source:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Analogue copy protection
The macrovision Analogue Protection System (APS) is based on Macrovision version 7.0 and is used to distort the composite video outpu to prevent recording and playback on VHS. This does not extend to RGB or YUV outputs for which new methods are required and are curently being investigated.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
so i could hook up an RGB (or YUV) signal from my dvd player to a vidcap card or vcr and record the movie without suffering the woes of macrovision? i dont plan on doing it, infact i dont think the vast majority of VHS players even have RGB or YUV inputs.. i'm pretty sure you could find adapters and such, maybe not though.. maybe there are some vidcap cards that have RGB or YUV inputs?
the document i read was from jan 2002, so it should be pretty up-to-date.. i dont think there have been alot of revelations in the last 15 months as far as the DVD standard is concerned.
i'm sure some of you will think "why would you vidcap a dvd when you could rip it and have superiour image quality?".. well if you wanna follow the law to the letter (in the USA) and make "backups" of dvd's, then capturing through RGB & YUV would be your only real legal options.. because using macrovision removers (video clarifyers) bypass the macrovision "copy protection" system, which i *think* is protected in the DMCA, as well as CSS..
now one question i do have, i have tried capturing dvd video through an S-video connection, but macrovison was there.. is an s-video connection considered "composite"?
nerd it up with your replies..
