  1. Ok I got a new laptop and tried a usb based "pc-linq"
It's a usb to usb cable with a basic program to transfer files from 1 computer to another.

That didn't work so the guy at compusa told me to use a RJ45 crossover cable. The down fall is there is no program with it. They tried to explain it at the store but I don't really understand . The guy at the store said set up sometime of shared file on one computer and drag and drop but I am still confused

So can someone explain to me how to do this (in exact detail)?

It might be simple for you but I don't get it.

    Thanks in advance

  2. Get the cross-over RJ45 ethernet cable.

Plug the cable into the network cards of both PCs.

    Turn on both PCs.

If you have WinXP on one PC, it makes it easy. You will have a folder called "Shared Documents" under "My Computer".

If the file you want to transfer across is on your WinXP machine, then copy the file into that folder.

Now, on the OTHER computer, double-click on "Network Neighborhood". Hopefully, the name of your other PC will show up. Open that and you should see a folder called "Shared Documents" (or something similar). Double click on that and you should see the file. Copy it it over.

If the file you want to tranfer across is not on your WinXP machine, then on that PC, open "Network Neighborhood" and find your WinXP machine. The open the Shared Documents folder. Then copy the file into that folder.

Then on your WinXP machine, you can move the file from the "Shared Documents" folder to anywhere you want.

    ---

If neither of your machines have WinXP, it will be a little bit more diffcult to set up as you will have to enabled file/printer sharing on one or both of your PCs. I suggest that you search the internet for a guide (there will be plenty) on how to network your home PCs.

There is no "program" to do this as once you get file/folder/printer sharing on your LAN, you can do all this stuff just with Windows Explorer. I suggest that you invest some time into learning how to do this. BTW, from memory, even the Win98 help files come with quite explicit detail on how to network your PCs together.

There's also a function on the XP cd to set up home networking, this was very easy (and it has to be for me!)
    Good luck,
