hey guys,
at least for region 1, the subtitles during alien talking is not hardcoded into the video itself, but rather in one of the subtitle streams as forced caption.
i think it's in 3rd sub stream...at least for me when i used vobsub/vdub, it was labeled as the espanol sub stream...weird

Uh. Haven't watched it yet, but, I have, to this day, NEVER used subs. Dunno, maybe I'll try it for once...

very interesting...have you done traffic or joy luck club (and many more like them).....they have major parts that are spoken in forieng language (spanish and chinese, respectively) and have subs that are NOT hardcoded into the video...i seriously don't think you can watch those movies normally if you didn't have subs for those parts....Originally Posted by crahak
as for star wars..both eps 1 and 2 seem to put the alien subs in the subtitle stream rather than hardcoded as well..granted, these scenes are not that much, but still affect the movie -
I don't recall seeing such scenes in movies, besides, say, if it was on VHS, no subs still, y'know. So if I ever went thru this, unless it's a few minutes long... Oh well. Never liked subs.

well..if it was on VHS, the subs will prolly be hardcoded onto the video...because in the case w/ traffic and joy luck club..at least 25% of the movies were foreign languageOriginally Posted by crahak
also, try working on amelie..it's a french movie w/ NO english dubbing...meaning there are only french audio tracks on the dvd (region 1 at least)...so in this case, subs are definitely needed -
I Know exactly what you mean! I ran into this when (as you said above) I ripped Traffic. I did a rushed job and didn't check it. when I whatched it I wound up saying "Huh?' Through like half of the movie. Had know clue what was going on in the movie. Than I re-ripped it and figured it out. That'll teach me to do a rushed job!

Can one of you gents help me with Windtalkers, as the subs are also not hard coded in the film. I have this thread going: http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=124249 but no one has answered the thread.

i have no problem watching traffic without the subs. the only problem is that dude from 187. his spanish is horrible. his accent makes it hard to understand what he's saying.

How good is ep2 ? Is it as good as lucas said that
it started ground up as a digital flim, perfect for DVD. -
it is very good. although i don't really notice any difference between it and other dvds. prob my small screen tv.

how about for the non-spanish speaking movie watchers??? the stuff they say in spanish take quite a big chunk of the movie....and prolly would help people to understand wut's going onOriginally Posted by Conquest10

true. kind of like when i watch crouching tiger, hidden dragon. but the subtitles don't really translate the words completely or completely accurately.

Uh, never heard of amelie. French is only a problem for so many peopleOriginally Posted by poopyhead
(English is my second language, like many other people...) Still, the only subs I can remember seeing hardcoded on a movie (mind you, my memory is quite bad) were in Austin Powers 3...

I have been trying to rip the region 2 Windtalkers and I can't seem to find the Eng lish subs for just the native American bit., There are 5 subtitle tracks shown usinf DVDx (0) English (1) English (2) Czech (3) English
(4) English None of them seem to have the bit I need.
Anyone done this successfully? I usually rip with Smart Ripper, DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc but find DIVDx handy for subtitled films.
I have read the threads about Windtalkers but I think they all refer to the region 1 DVD.carpe diem maņana
