I keep capturing my dv to avis with premiere, and I use the dvio tool as well. either way, I end up with an avi which I cannot open with virtualdub.

people tell me to use the canopus converter, but the output files on that still won't open!

I know people are going from camcorder to compliant avi, PLEASE tell me how! (and if you are using the canopus converter, tell me what settings, I am so sure I have tried all of them)

  3. What kind of DV encoder are you using? Try using the DV encoder Type 2. DV type 1 files can not be opened in VDUB. Or try Canopus file converter you can find it in under Tools on the left panel.

I'd be interested in the answer to this too.

So far I have got by with capturing from DV Camcorder (Sony Di-8) to Ulead Videostudio 6 then encloding with TMPGenc but VS 6 only creates DV Type 1 files. The issue I have is that VS 6 renders files that are out of synch, making editing a problem , so I'm looking for an alternative.

The free Ulead Type 1 to Type 2 Converter produces files that VirtualDub can open, but with very jerky video (tho' audio seems fine) so I am no further forward!

  6. You can capture type 2 DV avi with DVIO. You also need to install a DV codec. For example, the panasonic DV codec in the tools section.

okay Rondo, I have found the winning combination:

cap via firewire using DVIO (in tools section, tiny, free little program)

download the "mainconcept dv trial codec" (don't worry, it works fine, no time limit, no watermark for what we are doing)

    install the codec.

now virtualdub opens your capped avis.
