I have been looking for the best way to rip from a DVD-> DVD-R. And almost all of the methods require you to split audio and video and then re-encode the whole thing why???? Why can't it be done like the IfoEdit method???? Just rip,run Ifoedit,VOBrator, and Burn...I know some movies need to be re-encoded cause they don't fit on one DVD-R, But most do. Is there any advantage to splitting movies that just by ripping fit on one DVD-R?????????????????????????

If you want to reencode just the movie to fit on 1 DVD this is a bit easier to do. I'm guessing you want to keep the menus and extras though. To do that on 1 disc you'd have to compress your extras, correct the VTS and make several other very technical changes as I understand. It's possible but very time consuming.
Check out the guides section on Doom9. There is one about DVD9 > DVD5 Full Copy Instructions. That would be a good place to start.
It's for simplicity and time that most people don't do it. My opinion only and I'm pretty new at this stuff. Honestly 12-15 hrs of my time isnt worth the $16.95 I'm saving. (Blockbuster Pre-viewed prices). -
No I don't want to keep menus or extras. Just the movies. what I don't understand is why the need of having to split the audio and video and then re-encode. I know that by splitting the up you leave the audio untouched and then re-encode the video only. There are some movies that just by ripping them with DVD decrypter they will fit fine on one DVD-R.....and they are dual layer..not keeping menus or extras

Some movies are small enough to allow one to rip the main movie, strip out the extra audio/video streams and then burn (uncompressed) on to a single DVDr. I think it all depends on the size of the final titleset you create :/

Let's say that you have a DVD-9 disc that you want to back up, and all you want is the main movie/video (no extras and no menus).
For most movies IFOEdit is all you need. However, for movies/discs with more than 1 PCG (eg. TV series with 5eps/disc but you want 3eps/DVD-R) this isn't the best method.
Then it's nicer to de-mux, and re-author each eps so you can put in chapters/titles to easly switch between each eps. Other wise you have to either remove all chapters and ff/goto correct time. Or leave in chapters but keep skipping until you get to the start of eps2.
Also, some people like to just have the movie but with a very simple menu. And the only way to get that is to re-author. -
I see what you are asking now. My non expert opinion would be that you run into sync errors where the video gets out of sequence with the audio. I'm sure there is a more technical explanation. The new DVD2One program must be keeping them together when it does what it does. Seems too quick to demux and remux them.Originally Posted by esanchez

There's a guide right here for what u want:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/userguides/129774.php
This is the exact same file size as if you demuxed .ac3 and .m2v files then re-authored. Sometimes if stripped down it's still to big for 1 DVD-R.
THe one advantage to splitting for me is that when I re-author them I add my own title to just the movie, so that when it starts it sits on title screen while everyone gets popcorn and crap. Other than that there's no reason I can see, I do lots by the guide I mentioned and the movie starts right away when play is pressed.

ps. Also if u read comments it describes how to use latest Ifoedit not just rev 0.91
