I am a newbie, I downloaded a small movie. It had a .mpg extension. I used the TMPG program and I encoded it with the TMPG program and then I used Nero...I clicked file, new, vcd ... it went well...burned fine...when I play the .dat file in the MPEG folder on the cd I just burned it plays fine...but then when I play it in my new dvd player I got for Christmas it won't play...it says disc error...please eject disk...so I am confused about a few things...when you burn the file with nero..all these guides say to rename it...do you have to ...is that why it won't work...also my dvd player is Symphonic...thats the brand...could it just not play vcd's? do you have to encode .mpg movies with the TMPG program if they have a .mpg extension...please help me...I wasted 2 cds...and the .dat file plays fine in Windows media player

your dvd player (though i never heard of it) may not support cd's .. there are a lot that don't or at least not all brands...

I checked the manual and the dvd player says that if you attmept to play a VCD it will cause a malfunction...but then on this site it says 90% of DVD players can play VCD...so I dunno...can you guys answer a few questions tho...in the Nero program on some of these guides it looks like the file is on the left side window twice.....mine wasn't I just dragged and dropped it and there was only one file in the window(you know the window that shows what you are going to burn)...should there just be one file there...also....if the .dat file on the cd in the MGEGV folder plays fine in Windows Media player does that mean I burned it correctly?....I am going to try my cd on my mom's dvd player soon...I hope she has a name brand player...

Your DVD player may be in the 10 percent that do not play VCDs. It would help if you would give us the specific make/model number, and/or you could look it up yourself in the DVD players section to the left (that's what most of us would be doing anyway.) If you do "look it up" make sure you read the comments, also as they may give you additional insight.
One File on the left side of Nero is correct, provided you only dragged "one" over. The dat file in the MPEGAV folder is the correct format for VCD. -
even if a dvd player plays VCD's --it doesnt mean that it will play BURNED VCD's or even all brands of VCD's ... just look in some of the player reports ..

Thank you guys very much. I successfully downloaded a Friends episode with Kazaa...convertered it to VCD format with TMPGEnc and burned it with Nero and it worked on the DVD player attached to my Television. I am so happy..I didn't know anything about burning DVD's b4 I saw this website. Thanks so much.
Well the only thing now is that the quality is a little poor. There is a lot of back ground noise. I tried to burn an SVCD but it has problems. It has a lot of squares and doesn't play right. It plays but its just messed up. I don't know enough about it yet. Its gotta be something with the frame rate or bits per second or something I dunno. NE ways...in the TMPGEnc program there is a box for noise reduction in the wizard and when I click on it I get lost....can NE one explain how that works...thanks!!!
