  1. ok, I have had my fair share of experience with DivX, but this one is just aggrivating me. I DLed a movie in AVI form, so I assume it is a DivX file. I try to open it and all I get is blackness. So I go to see what codecs it is using. For both video and audio it says Unkown. I have all the latest DivX codecs installed, every video and audio codec from the nimo pack installed, and the SMR patch installed and nothing is working. I was thinking it was probably some stupid rarely used codec that is obsolete now, so it isn't being used but I still want to find out what it is. Any ideas on what codec it could be? I would also like to know if there is a program that can tell me what codecs a file is using. Any help with be greatly appreciated.

  2. Could be a fake file, there are quite a few outh there on p2p, xvid is another possibility (if its not installed on your PC). Try gspot to identify the codec.

  3. ok, I tried that gspot thing and it said it was an actual file and that everything was ok, but it said that no codec was needed to play it, it said it was uncompressed or a simple compression. It also could not come back with an audio codec. So as far as I can tell, it's a movie which should play without any codecs, however the codecs are not definable and when played there is no sound and the picture is black.

I tried DivFix on it, and it still doesn't work. Any other suggestions?

By xvid do you mean I should get it, or remove it if I have it? Also, what does xvid do, I am unfamiliar with it?

  4. Xvid is another codec similar to divx. It does sound like this could be a fake file. ie someone has just done a capture of nothing, mislabeled it and put it on a p2p network.
