I here everyone talk about Nero 5.5. Whilst I find it easy to use, you can not change the settings like bitrate etc. I tried using Tmpgenc but when I then got to put in onto Disk using nero I get a message saying that everthing is in the wrong settings. The quality on my screen is good but a bit blocky when I watch it on VCD with nero standard settings.
What is the best method to create a good quality VCD?
Please tell me in simple terms with settings if possible.

  2. You are conflicting yourself, first you ask for the best method for VCD, and then you ask about changing settings (XVCD), Nero can burn non-standard files, but as it is not much of an encoder but more of a burning/authoring program, you cannot expect it to do things it's not designed to do (would be like asking Microsoft to make an Operating System!), so if you want to burn/author a VCD/SVCD or non-standard formats, or even use Nero to encode AVI's to standard VCD's, you can let it to that, but if you plan on doing encoding, I suggest you use other tools.

  3. The best method is probably Smartripper to DVDAVI to TMPGEnc. The simplest method is the new DVDx. If you want to learn to tinker a bit, TMPGEnc has the best results for my money. But if you just want to click and go use DVDx...not as sharp as TMPGenc but a very nice easy solution. Whichever you choose, you use Nero to burn the whole mess. If you are fiddling with the bitrate you WILL get Nero errors but you can still burn. If you are burning a whitebook VCD (ie 1150 bitrate) then you won't get any errors. It sort of depends on what you want to do. ENlighten us and we will help you.

Ok I am downloadinf AVIs from the net and just want to watch them on my standalone VCD Player in the best quality I can muster. When I use standard Nero setting the result is a bit blocky, I was wondering how to improve this<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font size=-1>Quote:</font><HR size=1 color=black></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT SIZE=-1><BLOCKQUOTE>
