TMPGenc has alot of problems with MP3 sound on AVIs, especially if they are VBR.
Usually, I'll load the AVI into V-dub, and convert the MP3 to WAV, and then use the Wav file as the 'sound source' for the MPEG.
This is the method that most of the guides use...

Sometimes (when you load AVI into TMPGEnc) audio does not load and therefore the final Mpeg is without sound. Most of the time it can be solved by increasing DirectShow Multimedia File Reader's priority to 4-5 in TMPGEnc->Option->Environmental Setting...->VFAPI plug-in. You can see whether your audio has loaded by looking at Audio source: box in the main window - it should show the path to your AVI file.

in general your problem is sorted out if you extract the audio from VirtualDub as a WAV file. That however requires some time.
I've found you get great audio and no problem if you use an external audio coder with TMPGEnc. I used SCMPX and it works well, it will extracxt the audio file for you in a temporary file and then encode it and multiplex automatically. All what you have to do is to download the file and then instruct TMPGenc to encode using that.
I've recorded some classical music concerts and I have to say the quality is very good, while you risk no audio if you use just TMPGenc.
For reasons I do not know it seems SCMPX works well only with 44Khz stereo signals, and has problems with other encodings. -
thank you all! I have successfully solved the sound issue!!!
