  1. Over a few years, I've been slowly gathering hardware (thrift stores, pawn shops, good deals on ebay, etc) in hopes to some day have a decent line of hardware to digitize VHS tapes.

Here is my list so far.

    VCR's
    • Panasonic PV-V4621
    • Sony SLV-D300P
    • JVC DR-MV150 (Not an S-VHS but has S-Vid Out)
    Other Things
    • Older Macbook Pro with built in Firewire
    • Sony DCR-HC40 (Passthru to Firewire option)
    • Toshiba RD-KX50
    • Panasonic DMR-ES10
    • RetroTink RT5x with the VHS Profile
    • Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen2 Model 32060

Since the JVC VCR has S-Video out, this is probably the best choice for running the source tape? There are a couple ways I could skin this but curious what the experts have to say what you would do if presented with this list. I am a little unsure which would be better to use if I went the RD-KX50 or DMR-ES10 pass-thru route. Suppose I could test both options with a not-so-great tape and see what happens.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  2. The only way to judge what is best is to capture the same tape with each VCR. S-Video output does provide more accurate chroma, but there are so many other things which determine which will give you the best picture that you will only be able to tell by trying it yourself. This has become even more true as time marches on because each individual VCR can degrade differently with time, so you can no longer make blanket statements just based on reading the feature set.

  3. Yeah, I kind of figured there wouldn't be one unanimous solution. Guess will need to just experiment.

    Thanks
