I'm mostly off-grid and dont have access the internet much. So once installed and setup (which requires internet), does this software ask for online license validation checks or does it just leave you be?

I have version 7 installed, and yes, it validates your license online each time you run the program.

Sounds like it's validating it simply because it can, because you have the internet connection there but I suspect it will still eventually need validation offline, even if occasional.

TVMW7 validates the license online about every 14 days.
You can influence this behaviour inside preferences

There you can also force validation now if have internet connection and then for some days not.

Ok so why would one use this softare over something like Shotcut and free Divinci resolve? What made people choose it specifically?

  6. The original TMPGenc encoder was released more than a decade before shotcut or resolve existed -- and it continues to be developed as a good product. Shotcut was first released as a cheap (and at the time, clunky) NLE and Davinci was a color corrector. Neither was designed as a standalone encoder -- both have also improved over time.
