No matter whether I use avstodvd or dvdstyler something goes wrong when I try to burn a dvd with subtitles. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: I guess I should try to be more specific when I can. Some, but not all, of the hyphens from the subtitle file are removed by avstodvd

Probably a problem with he subtitle. Run it though SubtitleEdit
and use the "fix common errors" routine. Save as a new subtitle
    and use that

I don't if it helps, but here is the .mkv file, and here is the extracted subtitle file. I tried what you did, but it wanted to change to much from the source material.

Is there anything I can be more specific about?

Addendum. The .mkv file is taking a long time to upload so I am posting this now, and will edit this post once the .mkv file uploads.

EDIT: Added link to .mkv file

I ran your subtitle as-is in AvstoDVD (I just chopped off the ".txt" at the end of the filename)
    and it worked without errors.

DVD completed and working as expected

PS. I didn't use your MKV file but it shouldn't be necessary for testing purposes - any old video will do (as long as it's as long
    as the subtitle time range)

Important parts from the AVStoDVD log:

It shows up fine in the .mkv file that I linked you. If you think it will help I can try to upload the dvd folder that has the issues.

I don't see an issue in your log. Here are three lines from the subtitle file you posted, this line is repeated three times:

    Dialogue: 0,0:12:22.66,0:12:24.04,Default,,0,0,0,,{\pos(960, 995)}- Who's the bastard who's behind this?!
    Dialogue: 0,0:12:24.04,0:12:26.04,Default,,0,0,0,,- Who's the bastard who's behind this?!\N- Wait, don't shoot!
    Dialogue: 0,0:12:26.04,0:12:28.04,Default,,0,0,0,,{\pos(960, 995)}- Who's the bastard who's behind this?!

The middle line that has the - Who's the bastard who's behind this?!
and "- wait don't shoot" on a new line and it works properly, the "-" shows up as it should

But on the 1st and 3rd lines the "-" does not show up

I think you're going to have to go through the subtitle manually and fix all these occurrences, I don't know any other way of repairing it.

Here's a shot from the video_ts folder DVD at time stamp 12.25 played back in a media player with the timestamp
corresponding to the middle line above

Go through it and look for duplicates. I'm not an expert on these subs but you may not
    need anything special, just patience
PS how's the movie - worth watching?

Duplicates? Going to have to be more specific.

The reason that the “who’s the bastard” part repeats when the other doesn’t is that the .ass file was originally a .srt file from a video rip that I converted. This was my attempt to combine two different video files into one with credits cut out and personal tweaking of the details

Would sharing the original files help any?

Why not just use the original SRT?

For basic edits you can use a notepad. Otherwise SubtitleEdit

I was wrong about the format. It was .sup format in the original file

EDIT: also the sad thing is that if this was the only issue, I know of a manual fix. But there are other issues that I can't seem to find a workaround for

SUP is a bitmap style of SUBS, has to be OCR'd to get editable text.
I'm out of idea's, see if some others will chime in

Thanks for trying. one of the other issues is that while it avs to dvd handles italicized lines ok, when there is a single italicized word in a line, it always wants to merge the italicized word with a non italicized word. Did I phrase that correctly?
