  1. i would like to ask about free nle's for linux the following:

    1.

is there one (nle) that can create temporary files like pinnacle studio does. the way i understand it most nle's create temporary intermediate versions for files you import . so that the nle works with intra frame audio and video like for instance prores.

    BUT

does kdenlive (for instance, running in say mint linux) have that functionality? or is this something you would only find in paid for nle's like vegas studio or final cut pro?

    thank you

  3. DaVinci Resolve free version runs on many Linux versions. It has a very robust proxy workflow.

  6. so to come to a point i am still confused. when i started out here back in 2014 i learned that nle s use intermediate codecs in some form or other because intermediate codecs are intraframe which means they don't use gop's. this is so that you can cut them at any point and they wont jump to a previous or next intaframe where the gop ends or begins. so if i import mp4 files from a camera that uses avchd (mpeg2 transport stream) files how does kdenlive deal with this problem? does it uncompress the files to a temporary folder(or ram ) or does it transcode a permanent file to some intraframe codec before rendering the project. proxies are only to make the computer more responsive when working with large projects that has a lot going on in the timeline. proxies doesn't as i have it doesn't solve the problem of cutting a gop in the middle and then the nle jumps to the previous intraframe in the file which means your video will not render from the point you want it to.

so how does kdenlive (or flowblade) deal with this problem ?

  7. I think they all rebuild individual frames GOP by GOP at the edit points rather than converting the whole file to frames. Doing it that way is much faster, only the edit points need to be converted. Wherever you edit, the software only has to look back to the nearest full image and then adapt on subsequent ones to the selected point.

    ah ty very much.

    that answers my question.

kdenlive seems to be a very well maintained piece of software that wont disappear soon. as in not maintained and then you have to learn some other software.
