  1. Hi guys
I am looking for an m3u player to watch live tv. The program needs to run on PC, either linux or windows. The design should be remote friendly. I don't have too many expectations as far as the remote. just press up and down to change the channel, press left to show channel list, and it would be nice if there was a button to turn on closed captions. After weeks of searching, I thought I found the perfect program: Progdvb and its brother ProgTV. I loved this program until I turned on closed captions. Half the time, the closed captions don't even show. When they show, the timing is all off. They show before the actor speaks, or after the actor speaks. or they don't stay on the screen for long enough.

The problem is not with the source m3u, VLC shows the closed captions perfectly. But the good news is the closed captions are at the right position. when the actor on the left is speaking, his closed captions appear on the left. when the actor on the right is speaking, his closed captions appear on the right. I tried many programs and this position thing was another issue with a lot of them.

If I knew how to make windows programs, I would decompile this and fix this very annoying issue. But I dont know how.
Any ideas on how to fix the closed captions? or is there another program that fits my requirements?

The NextPVR Windows backend/server, which runs on a Windows PC, *might* work for some of what you want to do. It supports m3u8 streams via its IPTV feature, but I haven't tried that feature. The backend displays CEA-608 DTV captions, if they are turned on with a software setting, but I don't know if the backend can display IPTV closed caption/subtitle streams.

The NextPVR backend/server adds closed captions as an integral part of the picture. This allows closed captions to be displayed on a TV connected to the backend/server using HDMI. It also allows AndroidTV clients running NextPVR to receive closed capions over a home network in audio-video streams as an integral part of the picture.

The backend/server is supposed to be compatible with MCE remotes, but I have not tried using one lately. I use the manufacturer's remote to control the Android client devices (a Sony TV and various streaming devices that run either AndroidTV or GoogleTV). However, the NextPVR client software has no setting to turn closed captions on or off. Closed caption display can only be controlled using the closed caption setting in the NextPVR backend/server software.
