  1. Hello everyone.

I'm somewhat new to digitizing video and I've run into a bothersome issue. I can't quite tell if it's caused by equipment failure or if I'm missing something obvious.

Firstly I'll summarize my setup. I've got three VCRs, a Philips VR171, a VR200, and a Daewoo Q250. These are hooked up to a SCART to RCA/S-Video converter which in turn is plugged into a Nedis capture device, specifically this one here:

    https://nedis.com/en-us/product/sound-and-vision/photo-and-video/studio/550781279/vide...av-cable-scart

This is plugged into a Windows 11 machine running the VirtualDub software distributed on this website.

My issue is that both of the Philips VCRs do not output any video signal that I can see. The OSDs, however, are functional. Audio is also outputted from both of the Philips decks. I've confirmed that the issue isn't with my cables or capture card as they function as intended when plugged into the Daewoo.

I've tried cleaning the heads with printer paper and isopropyl alcohol with no luck or discernible change. Could it be that both of the Philips VCRs have suffered the same failure or am I missing something when it comes to these Philips devices?

  2. Your Philips are VHS only, so they don't provide a S-Video signal on the SCART connector. You can only output Composite video with the Philips. Pin 19 of the SCART carries the Composite video signal which you should connect to the yellow RCA of your nedis.
The Daewoo is VHS only as well, it's the yellow RCA which carries the Composite video signal.

  3. Ah, sorry I should've specified that I'm currently using composite video.

Edit: Some more context that I forgot to add in the original post. The VR171 I bought second-hand and cleaned with the printer paper/isopropyl. The VR200 is my old VCR from decades ago, it hasn't had its innards touched at all as far as I'm aware. The same goes for the Daewoo.

  4. Maybe your SCART-to-RCA "converter" is flawed, or the SCART connectors of the Philips are broken / loose.
Did you switch that converter to "OUT"?

I suppose there could be something wrong with the SCART connectors on the Philips devices, but it seems somewhat strange because since the OSD displays just fine. I'd expect there to be no output whatsoever if they were broken?

Yes, it is set to "OUT" and functions as intended when connected to the Daewoo with full video and audio.

If the capture device is setup to capture via composite and you see the VCR menu it is highly likely a faulty VCR.
