  1. This is DS9 S02E01 "The Homecoming." There's some kind of issue with the interlacing that's causing stars to look like "+" and some of the more heavily rainbowed areas to look ugly with the 3D comb filter. Any ideas on how this problem might be reversed?

These images are brightened to make the issue more visible.

  2. deblock before denoise, use a better upscaler,... use Vapoursynth or Avisynth for more control
share a sample of the source if you need an example/suggestion
(aren't the versions streamed by amazon&co better?)
Also, the luma range of your LaserDisc sample seems wrong.

No luck. This is all pre-upscale or any other processing.

Alright here's the sample with both comb filters:
    ntsc2d
    ntsc3d

Nope, the LaserDisc quality is far superior on the composite seasons (1-3) when captured with DdD. Amazon and others sourced from the same transfer as the DVDs.

Yeah sorry like I said I brightened those images so you don't have to strain to see what I'm talking about. The video samples above have proper levels straight from the DdD capture and colorspace conversion.

  4. If you need filter suggestions, share a sample of the source not some already filtered mess.

  5. I believe I've determined the issue is in the composite RF signal. Top is a good known disc, bottom is a problem disc. These are the VBI caption lines (40, 41, and 42). To me, it kind of looks like the chroma got shifted up 4 lines, the luma got shifted up 2 lines, and then the whole thing overlayed on the original. Just a rough guess though, this is territory I'm still trying to understand.
