  1. I was about 150 dvds in on upscaling before I learned about the telecineing factor. Thanks to UtahJohnnyMontana for his advice and explanations, especially his very useful post about ripping DVDs and telecining on the Topaz Redditt. I realized that a lot, if not all, of the problems I was seeing arose from the telecining factor.

I have heard great things about Hybrid and I am ready to jump in. But I wanted to see if Hybrid was my best bet for reverse/inverse telecining before using topaz to upscale. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  2. It's an excellent tool, yes. But read and take it serious what the author wrote here:

Hybrid is intended for advanced users.
It's not intended to be a tool used by everyone. It's not intended to please amateurs who need a wizard-like interface..
If you don't know the basics about containers, video formats, etc. Hybrid is not meant for you.

  3. You ruined 150 films by upscaling hard telecine? There's countless hours you'll never get back.

I think you can probably perform a simple IVTC more easily than by diving into Hybrid. As good as it is, it's also fairly complex. Maybe AVSToDVD?

Not sure if ruin is the right word. The all look very nice and if I rip sound separately and put it back in then in syncs up fine- but they are at 29.97 FPS. My understanding is that the image could be even better if I reverse telecining first. I did run one ripped movie through hybrid, pretty much using the default settings as far as the IVTC settings and it did revert the 29.97 FPS to 24 nicely and looks pretty good. I have hope.

Without IVTC the upscaled combed frames (2 out of every 5) of telecined material get damaged because the interlaced structure of those frames is messed up by vertical upscaling. One has to IVTC first and then upscale the progressive 24fps frames. Glad you got this right by now, using Hybrid.
