I have had such mails. Always ignore them since they are simply phishing.

But the question is always how they get your email addr.

From many different sources. Someone's email account gets hacked and they get the contact list, service you are using like forum software has the server hacked. There is very long list of ways. They may even just guess it. There is constant stream of email addressed to common names on any email server.

Once it's on one list it gets passed around and ends up on many lists.

Anyway. Allow me to relate a tale from my 'recent' past.

I had this email not from either my main email addr or the secondary (gmail/Google) one. But from the mail addr assoc with my website (zilch to do with video). So no guesses how they got hold of that.

The sender claimed they had accessed my webcam and all the hanky-wanky sites I had visited and if I did not cough up the bitcoin all my contacts would see the recordings of my webcam. Sure I was worried and for 30 secs I thought about how to get the bitcoin (even if I did not want them to see how big my tadger was ) even though I knew that would just be a drop in the ocean with more to follow.

    But then I realised.......

I do not have a webcam

The bottom line. If you do not recognise the sender do not reply.

I have sold all user emails to different hacker groups. I'm a billionaire now.
