well...here I am...a lonely lil newb with lots of my favorite cartoon episodes on my HD and I have no clue how on what I need to do to convert them to VCD so I can watch them over and over again on my dvd player. Some of my cartoon episodes are AVI and some are MPEG...I have already d/l TMPGEnc and Virtual dub and checked through the website on ways to convert many episodes to a VCD but all I seem to find is how to convert one entire movie...I was just hoping someone could send me a link to some place on this website that would give me the best overall understanding on how to do this...this will be my first VCD, so I really have no idea on where to begin. Sorry if this is a repeat question or a stupid question but as I said I'm am a lost and lonely newb. Thanks for any help you may give me, feel free to email me as well.
If I ever meet you I'll control + Alt + delete you.

  2. Ok, I think you better start with dividing your collection in 2 parts
the MPEG part and the AVI(DivX prolly) part

The MPEG files, are allready in VCD Compliant format... just get NERO 5.5 and burn them onto a VCD(but i do suggest you try SVCD)

The AVI files aren't yet in VCD compliant files.. You're gonna have to convert them

    VIRTUALDUB
    1) Open your avi
    2) Video -> Direct stream copy
-> Scan for BAD frames(this takes a while)
    3) Audio -> full processing mode
    -> COMPRESSION -> none(PCM) -> probably the first u chose
-> Conversion -> be sure to have 44100 Hz (=44.1kHZ)
    4) File -> SAVE AS AVI
    5) Lets go to TMPG

    TMPGEnc
    1) get rid of the Wizzard
    2) Open the AVI you made for VIDEO SOURCE
    3) Don't touch the AUDIO source, it's automaticly right
    4) do you see the button LOAD next to settings? click it
    5) you cal open different sorts of TEMPLATES.
    6) Select the one you want (if you live in US or Japan, select a NSTC format, If you life in "ALL CRICKET PLAYING" countries(=Europe) you select a PAL template. DVD is highest quality SVCD is Mediocre quality and VCD is low quality.
    7) hit SETTINGS
    8) VIDEO TAB: MOTION SEARCH PRECISION: HIGHEST QUALITY(very slow)
    ENCODE MODE: INTERLACED
    RATE CONTROL MODE: CONSTANT QUALITY(CQ)
ask settings of this: be sure the bar is to the right and the number says 100
    9) ADVANCED: Video source typ: NON INTERLACE
    Field order: FIeld B
Souce Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (PAL OR NSTC) 704*576
have enabled NOICE REDUTION, GHOST REDUCTION and SHARPEN EDGES and SOURCE RANGE if you want it to cut into pieces(dubbleclick for setts)
    10) hit OK
    11) hit START
    12) turn of the monitor and go to sleep
    13) burn it with NERO like you did with the MPEGS
    14) have fun watching your cartoons
    [/b]

Just because a file is in mpeg format doesn't mean that it is VCD compliant

  4. Xenophobe, as Craigtucker intimated, you should look for some tools on the 'net to check that your mpeg files are indeed VCD compliant, or else you will need to put them through TMPGenc.

And also following the steps El Torro has already outlined regarding your AVI files too. Regarding the AVI files though, before you "frameserve" them to TmpGenc for conversion to mpeg ready VCD files,I suggest you look for two VirtualDub filters called Flaxen's VHS & Flaxen's Cartoon filters & put them in your virtual dub folders. These two filters are a must for doing good cartoon mpeg files. I've been capturing old 15yr+ tapes of robotech & they're a great help along with other filtering tools in TMPGenc too. Good luck!

    Xenophobe...

Just some more advice on what's already begiven,

    1 minute equals 1 meg..

So if you have a 30 mintue Cartoon and you encode it as a standard VCD the final file size will be 300mb, meaning that you can get 2 Cartoon episode's onto a standard 74/80 minute CDR.

Now if your burner supports overburning and it will copy out to 90 mintue's, well you you get the general idea.

But bear in mind that your DVD player might not be able to play the 90 mintue CDR's, so i would suggest you buy just 1 90 mintue cdr and try that and see.

Just to correct your typo, for VCD 1 minute = 10Mb
