  1. I'm thinking about purchasing one of the two cards but I am unsure about a couple of things.

Are the two cards basicly the same. If any differences what are they?

I want to capture old vhs footage - would it be completely overkill to use these card for this purpose (cheaper cards promise they can do the same)

    Thanx in advance

  2. The ADVC-100 is a external firewire box with analog video in and out (plus firewire in/out to camcorder). It connects to yuor PC via a firewire port. The ADVC-100 captures DV audio and video on your PC.

The 1394 is a PCI card with analog inputs plus firewire inputs (same as the ADVC-100). Not sure it is has analog video output? It also comes with software so you can do real-time mpeg encoding from an analog source or a DV camera.

The ADVC 100 is anlog/DV in & out, 1394 card is analog IN only, DV in/out. See the Canopus website, it is quite good at explaining their products.

My question would be if i alrady have these software can i capture Mpeg 2 with the ADVC 100 like it says for 1394. Here is the email i recieved from canopus sales

    Hello Shashi,

Let me go ahead and answer your questions in numerical order; 1. Yes, the MVR-1000 does direct hardware to MPEG-1/2 encoding.; 2. No, the ADVC-1394 does not do direct hardware MPEG encoding. It will allow you to capture MPEG-1/2 (as well as DV) using the WinProducer software that is bundled with it; 3. The MVR-1000 will only allow you analog to MPEG encoding, nothing more. The ADVC-1394 will allow you to bring in either a digital or analog signal and encode to whatever the software you are using to capture to will allow. Hope this helps, and if you have any further questions please feel free to call us at 888-899-EDIT.
