I want to try and master making "DES" stereo from mono recordings.
Does anyone know of a safe free software download that worked?
It'll be used for both music and mono video soundtracks from the old camcorders.
Alternatively is there a not too expensive software you can purchase to achieve the same?

What have you tried so far and what research have you done?
Have you looked at stem separation tools?

  3. Here is a video how to do that with free software. Unfortunately it's in German but I think you can follow the steps shown on the screen.

I haven't tried it yet, as it will be a learning curve to the regular editing I do. Also have no Idea what software to use.
But now with 20 years ahead with nothing but spare time, I'm really bitten by the bug on this one.
Getting a real Stereo sound from Mono was a dream way before I heard of DES etc., Especially after decades of fake stereo vinyl etc, from the big record labels.

  5. Have you checked the video? That makes sense to me but it's quite a lot of work.

It can be done with stem separation, Izotope RX has its music rebalance.
There are probably other techniques; if you haven't done so perhaps join the Both Sides Now Stereo forum
    Also look at Spleeter
