Hello . . . Well after discovering this site I realize I have a steep learning curve ahead of me!
At this time my budget is constrained, and I need to accomplish some capturing quickly. I might try to convert an old xp machine, but that would be a future project.
Here is what I have & what I want to do:
Sony Video Hi8 Handycam CCD-TRV70 NTSC (the original device used to record the movies I need to digitize).
A yet to be seen VCR coming to me to from a university IT department to use for my VHS tapes to be digitized.
VirtualDub (need to learn it)
I have Adobe Premiere Elements 2022 for editing post capture.
I have scoured the forums, and I can not seem to tell which would suit my needs best, or which is more highly rated:
1. Hauppauge 610 USB-Live 2 Analog Video Digitizer
2. Diamond Multimedia VC500 One Touch VHS to Digital File
3. Elgato USB Video Capture
Thank you in advance for your advice!

Basically very few, if any, members will have experience with multiple capture devices (at least the better ones) and can only relate their experience on the one they use.
In my case, I use an older model of the USB-Live2. One potential issue with any device is driver support. With every new version of Windows, Ms will tend to stiffle support so you must look at the manufacturers own support to ensure that your OS is covered. -
I can only speak to my recent capture adventure. I went through EZCap 116 *(really old, I bought it 20 years ago). A Clearclick USB dongle (ill advised as it captures progressive and not interlaced - another whole story). I finally settled on the Hauppauge 610 USB-Live 2 which has been exactly what I needed. Works perfectly on Windows 10 and 11. I was capturing with Virtualdub 1.10.4 but have since switched to AmarecTV which doesn't have the timing issues I experienced with Virtualdub. Hopefully, your University VCR has S-Video connection, another bonus would be a TBC. I didn't want to spend the $500 plus for a TBC equipped VCR so I bought a JVC consumer S-VHS VCR then I picked up a Panasonic ES15 dvd recorder on ebay for around a $100 usd and have that setup as a pass through for S-Video. After a great deal of tinkering, I've got 5 captured VHS-C tapes in HuffyUV lossless now backed up and ready for post processing, the raw captures look amazing after QTGMC deinterlacing.
It's not important the problem be solved, only that the blame for the mistake is assigned correctly -
I'll add the IO Data GV-USB 2. It's absolutely bulletproof with Windows 10.

As long as the converter passes through unmutilated interlaced video, IMO the hardware is not as important as the condition of your playback device, the condition of the tapes, certain features that may or may not be important like time base corrector, and how you handle the video (deinterlacing, scaling, noise reduction, etc).
Out of the three I've used the VC500, and its driver is finicky, which tends to disappear from the system. The converter itself is not bad. And it is cheap. And it is not a noname product.
