I've spent the past year slowly plugging away at capturing some NTSC VHS tapes. I had to create notes to keep things straight, so I thought I'd share them in case they help others. I'm a newbie. Not an expert. These are not comprehensive. Take them for what they are.
Here is what I used in my setup: JVC SVHS HR-S2913U > DMR-ES15 > Pinnacle 710 USB > Windows 10 > Virtual Dub 1.9.11 .

NTSC VHS newbie summary #3: Pinnacle 710 USB Capture Device
I tested 3 capture devices and found that the Pinnacle 710 USB was the best for both audio & video on Windows 10 (when using virtualDub 1.9), but that wasn't surprising based on what's in this forum.
Here is my comparison of (a) Honestech VHS to DVD 5.0 (b) Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3 PLUS and (c) Pinnacle 710 USB device

I learned of the Pinnacle 710 USB device because it is recommended for windows 10 by lordsmurf:

"For windows 10: Pinnacle 510 / 710 USB, NTSC, similar to ATI AIW USB, WinXP/V/7/8/10 all work well"
Setup Steps:
(Credit to lordsmurf)
- Drivers: Download & install drivers, reboot is required. From: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-capture/10136-virtualdub-capturing.html#post64929
- CrossbarThing: Download, install and start "Crossbar Thing", set to s-video crossbar. Close. http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-capture/9379-how-enable-video.html#post58837
- Then open VirtualDub, capture mode. (NOT VirtualDub2) http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-conversion/1727-virtualdub-filters-pre.html
- Preview mode, not overlay.
- Set to s-video if needed (if not already showing s-video), should look perfect.
lordsmurf: "Notes:
- Do not use VirtualDub2.
- Crossbar Thing is only need for post-XP (Vista/7/8/10)
- For some XP systems, Overlay may work fine on the 710."
