Found it. Apparently, the original SVHS tape was cobalt-coated ferric-oxide tape similar to regular VHS, with finer magnetic particles and increased coercivity and greater high frequency output. But still compatible with regular VHS.

According to a former BASF employee in one of vintage AV forums there were variations of chrome tapes for both VHS and S-VHS, hence different tape colors, The dark black could be the ones.
