Just wondering if anyone knows what happened to user "babygdav." He was always very helpful when I had questions but I noticed that he was banned. Anyone know why?
Thanks.

Well, the only thing I can agree with is that he did link to other articles but, that never bothered me but, I guess it was against the forum rules. Oh well. He was extremely helpful and nice to me which is more than I can say about some members who replied to my posts. It is what it is.
-
He gave out a lot of misinformation. You will literally get dumber by reading many his posts, and have a wrong understand of video. Current/former professional like myself and Cornucopia, and others, plus quite a few serious hobbyists, were constantly correcting his misleading nonsense.
Several posts also got political (of the tinfoil hat variety), and that probably led to a ban.
He will not be missed.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

His level of utter nonsense in the first thread I encountered him almost made me leave this forum. I was seriously considering asking to be permabanned because he was so seriously misleading the OP of the thread that I was really close to saying things that would get me into trouble. I came to my senses and stayed because I couildn't bear to see the OP headed down a pointless rabbit hole.
-
Seems that there is more negative than positive about him to be said on this forum. Of course, without specifics, I can't judge either side as there are always two sides to every story. All I have to go by is my experience with him. I was/am a complete noob and he took a lot of time to help me get up and running with my specific needs regarding video editing. Of course, everything he suggested I did my own research on and was able to verify it.
My experience with most if not all forums is that the members don't like to help noobs. They feel most noobs are beneath them and, when presented with the opportunity, reply with an air of superiority and haughtiness, reply maybe once or twice or simply don't bother to reply. Of the few people who have replied to my posts on this forum, he was the only one who continually replied with an apparent desire to help. He will be missed by me. Hopefully I will encounter more helpful members in this forum like him. We will see.
-
In truth you probably only saw him in the threads you started. Many, including myself, and I am no 'expert', saw through him very early on by reading most of his posts.
His level of expertise was not what he knew but what he thought he knew. There were so many links in his replies that one could hardly know if he was quoting from knowledge or simply Googling. And if you merely then read from those links you can believe his 'sermons'.
Some people are 'clever' in making you believe what they want you to believe. Our 'friend' fell in to that category.
We do not despise noobs. Everyone was one once.

You may be taking this as another member being harsh and unhelpful to you, but IMO you set the tone for the replies in your first thread by bumping that thread with: Keep in mind that everyone in this forum is offering advice for free (and to my knowledge no regular has ever accepted an offer of payment for help) and many don't visit regularly, especially on the weekends.
Most of the members are generally helpful and friendly and are the opposite of "...don't like to help noobs.". But again you hit a sour note [in your second thread] after you replied to Cornucopia with:Your "none can do it automatically, if you don't" makes absolutely no sense but implies that I may be stupid enough to think it can magically happen on its own. Your reply is of no value as it does not address any of my questions and reeks of an air of superiority and haughtiness.
Unless you can point me to a free crash course on video editing, then thanks for nothing.
I highly suggest that in any forum, you think twice before posting a, IMO, snarky reply to someone, especially a highly regarded and respected member like Corncucopia. I'm not saying you have to tiptoe around anyone, but IMO (and probably other regulars) your remark was a huge red flag that caused them to stop trying to help. I hate to crap on him, especially now that he's gone, but he probably enjoyed rambling on without anyone to correct him until Cornucopia finally returned.
Welcome to the forums. Respect everyone and keep your negative replies to yourself or at least think twice or better three times before posting them. You took the right road by double-checking everything babygdav posted (I usually encourage members to check on anything I post).
Finally, search this forum again and again before posting your questions. It's very likely someone in the 20+ years this forum has been around, someone has at least asked a similar, if not exact question before. Being a 'Noob' only gets you so far if the question has been answered before (sometimes hundreds or thousands of times).Last edited by lingyi; 23rd May 2020 at 08:10.

And before you ask, I did not 'stalk' him.
I was away over the New Year and when I opened the forum on my return his replies were all over the 'New Posts' and in many, many different subjects. It is rather hard to believe someone have that level of actual knowledge in so many subjects.
But being aware, I did make a point of reading since he was always on that page. At one point I even challenged him to state his background just to give him the benefit of doubt. He never responded but just carried on as before.
We can all use search engines to find answers. I do that regularily but only in the last resort start a topic here when specific clarification is required.

A long time ago, my boss at the time told me that I thought my co-worker was so knowledgeable because "You only think he knows a lot, because of what you don't know". Sage words that have stayed with me for decades. Sure enough, as I learned more, I came to realize a lot of what he said was puffery at best, outright lies at worse!

Funny how a negative "tone" gets people's attention. Psychology 101. I simply asked for help and wasn't getting any. Did I also set the tone asking for help?
What I said may not have been popular but it was the truth whether you agree with me or not.
Even if its the president of the U.S, I call it like it is. I asked a simple specific question and expected a simple answer, not whether I was capable of understanding something or doing anything about it. I interpreted that members comment as a "snarky reply" and a red flag was raised for me but I am guessing my red flag is not considered legitimate here since I am new or an "unknown."
What one may take as a negative is simply a matter of opinion and objective. Something a member said, I took as negative and others didn't. Some took what I said as negative, and others didn't. Two sides to everything.
So the advice is to search thru 20 years worth of posts and replies (no matter how outdated they may be) rather than to make a quick post asking questions pertaining to my specific situation so as to not bother the members on this "help" forum. Well, I'm in a no win situation then because I can't make a full-time job out of searching thousands of old post and replies, I've been labeled as a red-flag raiser, and asking for help is a no-no because its been done before.
I'm not here to start conflicts, all I wanted to do and still want to do is just to learn about video editing and ask questions to those who know more than me which is why I was looking for babygdav. Whether he knew, didn't know, pretended to know, or was learning himself by teaching (which is one of the best ways to learn) is of no consequence. He helped another member and that is what a "help" forum is supposed to be about, helping. The rest doesn't matter as long as no one gets hurt.
I guess I'm next in line to get banned because I will be deemed as a negative member asking for too much help. Such is life. Regardless, If I don't get banned I will post if I have questions about editing and hopefully some members with some critical thinking who haven't buried me and put a cross on my grave will simply stick to the subject at hand and actually try to help another member on this "help" forum.

After using this forum for 15 years and being a member for 14 years, I still use its search function regularly to find answers and it is usually the fastest way to get them. You don't have to wade through many years of posts. Searches can be done by "Relevance"(most closely matches the phrase in the search) or by "Date" (the most recent related posts first). ... but FWIW, sometimes the best advice or the correct answer given in reply to some questions remains the same over many years.

Nonsense. There are never "sides" to a story. There is fact/truth, and there is BS. Only those who say "always two sides" are unable to discern which is which.
You're being a drama queen. Just use the forum, learn, post. You act as if you want emotional support in addition to tech support. I really do despise people that perceive "negativity" where no such thing exists. If you want actual negativity, go to 4chan.
My experience with most if not all forums is that the members don't like to help noobs.

We've gotten far off-topic, primarily because of my posts, but I admit I sometimes don't like helping noobs, despite my being one in so many subjects. However, they're the ones asking questions like "How do I digitize my VHS tapes in the best quality possible" or "How to do RIP to MP4". Questions that have been asked and thoroughly answered literally hundreds of times here and at DigitalFAQ. Yes, there are stupid questions! At least those that can be answered with a quick 10 second search.

I really don't want to keep this contest to see who has the biggest penis going (which is what this post has become) but, I found your reply so funny I couldn't help myself.
There are always two sides to every story, always. Thats simply a fact you can't change. Yeah, I agree that after, and only after both sides both sides have been heard can one discern which side is "fact/truth." So, the only BS is your reply stating the obvious and your failed attempt at intellectual superiority.
You call me a "drama queen", say you despise people like me, and say I am seeking emotional support but, I am simply "perceiving" negativity? This is hypocrisy at its best. In which one of my replies in this post have I attacked or called someone names as you just did me? You fail again. And what emotional support am I seeking? By wanting answers to my specific questions? LOL What are you on? I can't make heads or tails on that one.
Really? Did you chime in when I have asked questions? Hmm... Oh but you certainly chimed in to attack me and call me names no? Even a member here just admitted he/she I admit I sometimes don't like helping noobs. Imagine all the others who feel the same way but just don't say anything about it..
I haven't been here long enough to make that assumption as only one former member has been helpful to me. Judging by what this post has become, the prospects don't seem favorable.
What I need to know and not what I want to hear? What I need to know is an answer to a possible question I may have. What I want to hear is an answer to a possible question I may have. So again, what are you on? Again, I can't make heads or tails over this one.
-
Well you had some hints.
What is also obvious is that a number of posts have been deleted (including one I read) and we can, as mere mortals, only make assumptions.
You could always contact the sys-admin (link is on the bottom of this page) to see if he is willing to provide more clarification or reason for the ban. But he is GOD and he is not answerable to anyone since he interprets his rules as he wants. And this is from a former forum-mod (not this one) who played 'God'
But let us turn the clock back to your very first topic. The forum rules etc. clearly state that you should search first and ask later. Equally not be impatient if you do not get replies. In fact absence of the reply should even indicate that there was no answer. Even these 'helpful' replies indicated so. But you chose to ignore the basic truth but accepted the 'flannel' which was nothing else but a long-winded way to state the self-same answer.

@Snoopy329
My advice is to leave this thread be (as you stated you would earlier), as your rebuttals, contrary to what you may believe, are doing nothing constructive for your case. If your posts on other forums are the same as those here you're building a case showing why you've apparently had negative experiences with them.
-
Right. But the "rebuttals" of others here are who have name called (which I did not do) and have been negative towards me (which I did not initially do) are ok and constructive. I guess there is a blue code here where you don't acknowlege colleague's/members errors or misconducts. I can't compete with that mentally.
I've never had negative experiences in other forums only to say that they have not been helpful because like here, they don't like helping noobs. You know like you stated yourself you didn't like doing.
If you read back, all my comments (before you started being negative towards me) were in no way, shape or form offensive or directed at anyone. But of course, I'm not allowed to defend myself against anything "negative" someone directs at me. Thats a no no. Gotta love that blue code. Its fighting a losing battle.
-
I don't get why some are jumping at you (not commenting about babygdav), presenting your opinion.
But this is what internet is. Just opinions not necessarily what actually it is. Everyone caries some truth or false.
We are designed to make social justice and solution standing next to each other coming from 5 mil of years of evolution, not by correspondence.
-
Only quick to judge, prideful, negative people who like to crucify somebody as soon as they can do this and unfortunately, that is the norm these days especially in cyber space which provides a fast track to just that. I'm not saying you are doing this, but I think the consensus here now is he's bad, we're good and most everybody will jump on the bandwagon against the bad guy.
-
I'm telling you that everybody here recognizes that kind of cheap manipulation for what it is, nobody likes it, and that few will put up with it for very long. For the most part, you get back what you give here. Start dealing honestly with the other members. Grow a thicker skin, stop thinking the worst, and treat them like you want to be treated. Otherwise you may find yourself being ignored for real.

Ahh. I guess your part of the bandwagon and the blue code. A bit of drama maybe? So "Boy this forum is not very helpful. Did I break some rule or something or do I need to ask expert questions to be considered"? is cheap manipulation? Interesting psychology you have there.
Give me evidence when I haven't been honest with other members here... I'm sure you'll have a hard time with that one. I have spoken my mind and have defended myself without name calling or attacking anyone personally (which is more than I can say for some here) so no, I don't need to grow a thicker skin.
Yeah I do treat others like I want to be treated and If you would have read every single other post I have made you would have seen how I treat others and not judge me by that one sentence you filter. You don't like the posts I have made defending myself? Well too bad for you but that won't stop me and if anyone chooses to ignore me "for real" for simply defending myself, so be it. It'll simply prove I was right all along.
Stop thinking the worst? Funny since it doesn't stop comin.Last edited by Snoopy329; 25th May 2020 at 18:13.
