Hi, i find the any video converter is easy in all respects of convertion of videos to required format.
But when i select customized mp4 as common video format and convert and going to the video menu, i find x264 video in video options and ofcourse, i find mp3 in audio option, but no h264. i very much doubt that my tv supports h264 and mp3, but not x264 in mp4 container.
is mpeg-4 equal to h264 or h264 is better video format.
could any experts say, why h264 is not a video option in any video converter
in vlc i have the format, but somehow, it is not working as correctly as any video converter.
i am trying to convert mkv file to mp4 format and i do want a fixed comman video format, so that i could convert all videos to this format. help

H.264 is a video standard. Many codecs conform to this standard with x264 being one of the most well known. So any time you encode with x264, you are making a H.264 compliant file.
MPEG-4 is usually short for MPEG-4 part 2 which is a standard. The most popular codec for that is Xvid. Xvid is generally much worse than x264.
MP3 is a standard, with the most popular codec for that being LameMP3. -
There are a lot of people here that know a great deal more than I do. Nonetheless, I will say that in my experience, Xvid (for which I used to use AutoGK back when I made Xvid files) produces better looking standard-definition video than h264 under many circumstances. Not many people have a need for that anymore, but I thought it worth mentioning in case it mattered to you. For example, I have a lot of home videos in an avi container that uses the xvid codec for this reason.
...and I second the Handbrake suggestion. It has mp3 (which I still put into my video files for compatibility), is free, and is a piece of cake. -

Hi, thanks all for wealth of information.. on deep analysis of any video converter, i did find two buttons one nvidia and other opengl for x264/h264 option. Both were unchecked and on nvidia drivers, it says my system has no such drivers. So, i selected opengl, which i ticked and which was accpeted.
Hi, Karma, thank you for stating that x264 is h264 compliant and hence i will try to save as x264 video and mp3audio in mp4 container.
i never come across any video converter, that gives driver compliance options like nvidia drivers and opengl drivers.
could you please through some light on ithis point.
if my tv, plays x234 video, then i will choose avc with this as my conversion preferences. -
Hi, Karma , i asked you details on something on the drivers. i enclose the picture for your reference .
vlc gives this x264 as H264 mpeg-4 avc part 10 avc 1
So, your answer of x264 is the best format in h264 video format.
please say little more about nvidia and other drivers influence in codecs -
If you want the best H264 encoder, go with x264 with a medium or higher preset. If you want super Fast yet not the best, go with the Nvidia, Intel QS, or AMD/ATI encoder.
I have no idea why that program is suggesting that x264 can be accelerated with AMD/ATI cards, UNLESS it's strictly for decoding the source. Other than that x264 has no GPU acceleration to my knowledge. Or that program does not actually mean x264 at all when talking about AMD/ATi but instead is confusing x264 for h264.Last edited by KarMa; 19th May 2020 at 23:33.

Hi, when I check vlc, codec,it says,h264,mpeg-4 avc10 (avc1) with audio mp3. so,the converted version of x264 is working. The quality is good and my tv supports this .
do not know much about acceleration. Can I s=use any video converter
