avi to mpeg2

hi i am having trouble converting a avi to mpeg2
i have tmpgen 12i and i cannot even load the file. I have already downloaded the divx 4 codec but was unable to install the kristal codecs (my install program would freeze). I am able to load the avi file with tmpgen 12a but when i convert the file, the resultant file has no video or audio?

can someone help me out on this matter.

First, make sure you can play the file with media player. I've you can't then you don't have the correct codec installed.

If you can play the file in media player, but TMPGenc still won't open it you might want to try to spilt the file into a seperate video and audio file with virtual dub (I assume this is a DivX file).

Also, sometimes TMPGenc has trouble opening files if the template is set to interlace (i have no idea why) so load the standard VCD template and then try to open the avi (this sometimes works for me).

yes, i can open the file with a media player so the correct codec is installed. Also tempgenc template is not set to interlace but i still have problems opening the file. How do I spit the file into vedo and audio using virtual dub. what compression algorithm should i use for audio and video?
