  1. Hello!

I'm new to the world of encoding and I have done a few videos using HandBrake but it seems like the color is always off.

I've exported a few screenshots between the source and the encoded but it kind of shows a greenish tint and I am not sure what settings could help fix the color issue.

If someone could help me with this, that would be great!

  2. You probably have a display problem, not an encoding problem. How did you produce the two images?

I used Media Player Classic and used that program to take screenshots.

  4. Bump.

Not sure if I'm allowed to bump this thread but I apologize in advance if that's the case.

Please try not to "bump" your topic.
Replying to your own topic to get it to the top is annoying. Try to have some patience, this is a bulletin board, not IRC. It may take some time (e.g., one or two days) before someone can answer your query or question.
    see: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/72386-Forum-rules-Acceptable-Use-Policy-(AUP)?

picture link doesn't work for me,...
Instead of pictures which might not be taken properly, small video samples are usually better, since they allow others to decode the content themselves and easily spot some of the usual problems.

here are a few of the typical reasons for color differences:
    • missing VUI flags which inform the decoder about the color (especially when resizing/cropping the content)
    • decoder that doesn't read or respect the color infos
    • some post processing which does change the color
    • some filtering which did a YUV<>RGB conversion during reencoding which didn't respect the color matrix
    • problem with video renderer (especially when videos are opened in parallel)

Thanks for your response. Sorry about the bumping. I bumped it because it was 2 weeks since my last post.

What's the best way to take the video samples?

  7. No clue what's the best way.
Personally I would, open the source and the reencode with ideally the save filter in Avisynth or Vapoursynth and stack them either horizontally or interleave them.

Try opening your source with AviDemux. Set Video Output and Audio Output to Copy. Set the Output Format to the same as your input (MP4, MKV, AVI, etc.). Use the Mark-in (A) and Mark-Out (B) tools to select a small portion of the video that shows the problem. Save the clip.

Encode the clip with Handbrake as you did before. Verify you have the same color problem.

    Upload the two clips.

  9. Doh,.. no clue why I read this as 'hat's the best way to compare the video samples?' *gig*

  10. If nobody could see your pictures you will receive no help, your link is broken to me.

No worries Selur and thank you jagabo for the response. I tried running it through AviDemux but the audio sounds really awful even though I set it to copy. Not sure if I'm doing something incorrectly...

    Encoded clip: https://mega.nz/#!lYFwUSYK
    Source clip: https://mega.nz/#!ZE9TAQKS

I did go ahead and encode it anyway to check the colors and the colors do seem a bit off. I think it looks darker? Please mute the audio so it doesn't kill ears though.

    Thanks again!

  12. The links aren't working for me. It says I need a decryption key.

Sorry, it's my first time uploading on mega. How about this:

  14. I'm seeing essentially the same colors. Even interleaving the two videos and stepping through frame by frame. I can no longer see the images in your first post, but as I recall the differences weren't as large as a rec.601 vs rec.709 error, or a PC levels vs. video levels error. I suspect the differences you are seeing are the way your computer is displaying 10 bit AVC vs. 8 bit AVC. Do you have a particular frame where you see the biggest differences? I'll upload images from my computer for you to compare.

https://imgur.com/a/inZ2Pbf Here's the comparison. The purple in the background look quite different in both screenshots. Maybe it is a display on my side. Is there a way that I can fix it?

Also, is there something I can do about the jumbled audio from AviDemux?

    Thank you!

Some of the other colors are different too. The grey jacket in the foreground, for example. Here's what I get from a similar frame of the two videos (with AviSynth decoding):

Nearly identical aside from encoding artifacts.

I'm pretty sure it is a problem with the display at your end, not the encoding. Probably a problem with 8 bit being converted to 10 bit for display, or vice versa. Try using different output devices in your media player. You could probably work around it by encoding 8 bit instead of 10 bit.

I haven't seen that before. I don't use AviDemux very much though.

    I'll try that. Thank you!
