  1. Can you also convert an avi to mpeg and do this? Or only if your copying a dvd?

In other words a downloaded movie? Or is this just for ripping?

How far can you stretch the over burn in nero or movie factory? These are the only programs i've used but I'm willing to try others espeacially if the vcd can be on 1 disk! That would be awesome!

Yes, you can convert a downloaded movie to MPEG. I've burned like 820-830 MB "downloaded" movies with TMPGENC and Nero (on an 80min./700mb disc). All you really have to do is unlock the VCD template in Nero, and use the built in graphic calculator at the end of the tmpgenc wizard and adjust that to your needs. Just follow the "newbie guide" without the DVD Ripping steps and you'll get it easy.
And you MUST make the mpeg MPEG 1-non standard in tmpgenc. I spent about 2-3 weeks yelling at the computer screen because id repeatedly get movies too large, even after following all the steps in the guide.
keep in mind that 80-100 minute movies usually look pretty good; there's not much noticeable difference between this and standard VCD, however, anything above that is gonna range from all right to terrible. have fun burning these XVCD's... they really made my life a lot easier (i hated wasting 2 discs on one movie and then getting up in the middle of the flick to switch cds!!!!)

This is your first post, so I guess you have not made any VCD's before ?

You need to find out what your DVD player will play, Load the AVI into TMPGEnc then load a PAL/NTSC VCD template and click start, change NOTHING !

This will make a fully compliant VCD for you to test using a good quality CDR. You may need to split it in half with TMPGEnc merge&Cut

When you have verified you DVD player will play these OK "Without problems" you may wish to try other things like XVCD (1 disk) but remember cramming it all on one disk means your going to loose quality, AND it may not play on your DVD standalone.

Sorry for hijacking this thread. But can you expand on this portion of your explanation? Ie: the "Unlocking of the nero template" - how?

As I am facing more or less the same problem ie: I have a 859mb mp-1 file and obviously it will not fit onto a cdr. Nero says that it is too large for the target media, which is understandable. But as I understand it, you are saying that the Nero template can be made to be more forgiving of the media limitations.

    Thx

  5. I have successfully made vcd's of downloaded files using movie factory but only on 2 discs. I want to try to burn them on 1.
How big of a file can I get on a 700mb disc doing the above? How high can I set the overburn or whatever in Nero? I've never used Nero for vcd's but looked at it a bit after reading some posts here.
    Thanks in advance, Debi

yeah what King John said was extremely important.
About unlocking the vcd template in nero, i meant to write "unlocking the vcd template in tmgenc". i've never used nero to encode the mpeg, i only use it to burn it to cd in the end.
To unlock, you skip the wizard and go to the main tmpgenc screen. Then you click "LOAD" on thebottom right of your screen and load the VCD(PAL) or VCD(NTSC) template. Then, you click load again, and go into the "EXTRAS" folder, and click on "UNLOCK.MCF". Now it is unlocked and you can change important settings such as bitrates.
All this is thoroughly explained in the guide though, the only thing is, you skip all the DVD Ripping steps and go right to the TMPGENC section of the guide. Instead of loading in the DVD you were supposed to rip, you load the movie which you downloaded! It's pretty easy, just follow directions. Even I can do this, and I'm terrible at following directions.
To Big1, sorry for bringing your hopes up about the unlocking the nero template... i got confused when i was writing my first post. I dont believe that you'll be able to fit 859mb on a disc - highest ive gotten in about 831mb. If youre a patient person, you probably should rencode the video using TMPGENC and the steps in the guide.
MomK, i've never messed with any Overburn settings in Nero, in fact, I checked just now and Overburning isnt even enabled! So basically i've been burning 830mb files without overburning. my advice is just to play around with it i guess.

  8. This is a great site that has TMPGEnc templates that are tweaked so you can put a whole movie on just one CD and good quality too...Ive tried em..see if it helps..You right click on the template you want and download it. Load it in the Template folder of TMPGEnc and load it up....Hope it helps !!

Oh and if you unlock it and set things up as you want them, then save the template, you now have YAT (Yet another template) which you can call your own and upload it to some internet site to impress people
