I have a Dell computer with an nVidia video card connected via HDMI to an HDTV. When connected directly to the TV the video and audio work. However, if I try to run the HDMI from the computer to the receiver there is no sound or video, the TV says signal not detected. Why would it not work through the receiver?

This sounds like an HDMI handshaking problem. Such problems are very common when receivers are connected between the TV and a source device. Troubleshooting guide
-
It may be HDCP 2.2 issue - i doubt that NVidia is HDCP 2.2 compliant and seem that TV and Receiver are and they may use HDCP 2.2 but not NVidia - if there is possibility i would try to force TV/Receiver to use lower HDCP or not HDCP at all - perhaps you can force DVI mode on NVidia - maybe this help to avoid HDMI problems.

Have you tried another source to the same receiver hdmi such as a blu-ray player to rule out any other issues? If the video card connects to the tv properly then it might be something other than hdcp issues.

Problem with HDCP 2.2 is that link from source to sink must be consistent - there can't be connection where HDCP 1.x and HDCP 2.2 are active in one chain...
But there is plenty possibilities why it doesn't work however as receiver and TV are quite new i rather expect that they will work correctly in terms of interoperability so HDCP 2.2 as a problem source look quite reasonable. -
The only thing I can suggest is this
Turn every thing off, maybe even unplug the power cord
Note start in this order
Turn on TV select hdmi
Turn on receiver
Turn on PC
Sometimes it is the order in which electronics 'shakes hands' and acknowledge the connection -

Now that I got the computer connected and working it has brought up another problem. The TV/Receiver/BDP/DVD/PS3 all work fine but the SAT (DirecTV) causes the computer screen to flash and I don't mean flicker or color splash but more like the video card has to detect the signal over and over. This only happens when the SAT is powered on. I have everything else working perfect, there are no other conflicts or problems. It's all with the UHD HDMI 2.0a cables except the computer HDMI cable. Here are the specs again:

The only thing I can think of is that the problem has something to do with the NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS not having HDMI 2.0 or HDCP 2.2, which both the TV and audio receiver apparently support.
A NVIDIA Geforce GTX 950 card would be the least expensive option to add HDMI 2.0 add HDCP 2.2 to your PC (and they include HEVC hardware decoding). http://www.anandtech.com/show/10237/evga-releases-geforce-gtx-950-low-power-graphics-c...s-with-75w-tdp
[Edit]On further thought I don't know if that would solve the problem. Does the DirecTV receiver have HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2?Last edited by usually_quiet; 22nd Jun 2016 at 14:27.

The GeForce 8400 GS does have HDCP 2.2 and it shows that it is working. How do I know if it has HDMI 2.0? I don't see that in the GUI.
-
If it has hdcp 2.2 it will be backward compatible for 2.0
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Are you sure it has HDCP 2.2 and not HDCP or HDCP 1.2 or 1.4? As far as I know HDCP 2.2 requires an HDMI 2.0 connection, but HDMI 2.0 hasn't been available on PC graphics cards for very long.
Even some cards with HDMI 2.0 don't implement HDCP 2.2. I think the first NVIDIA cards with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 available arrived just last year, and someone needed a Display Port to HDMI adapter to get HDCP 2.2. If AMD/ATI have any, then they were just recently released.
Flashing can be a symptom of an HDMI handshaking problem involving HDCP. -
The problem has gone away. I'm not sure why it was doing that nor why it went away. We'll see if it stays away. Thanks for helping.

It keeps doing this so I gave up and put the HDMI cables (PC, SAT, PS3, DVD) directly to the TV and then an optical cable from the TV to the receiver.
