BD Rebuilder...if you want to keep the movies in Blu-ray format. You'll need to decrypt them first before using BD Rebuilder.

If you want MP4 or MKV files instead, the choices are more varied. You can use BD Rebuilder for this type of output file also, but there are others like MeGUI, Ripbot264, Vidcoder and Handbrake to name a few.

Hello guys! If you want a easy and free way to doe it and you dont have experience i suggest you MakeMKV to Decrypt and save the Blu-ray to your Hard Drive and Handbrake to encode it. Best Regards!

Pardon my ignorance of the proper translation of the lingo used. Is the word "decrypt" the same as "rip", this means to to decrypt the software while copying it to your hard drive at the same time, is this correct?

To "encode" a file or disc, is this the same thing as to "shrink" a file so that it will fit on the blank disc?

Thank you for the proper interpretation of the lingo used in burning or copying a disc? I will definitely try your above suggestion, thank you for your suggestion.
    Thank You,

  7. Golfnut, your understanding is almost correct, (just slightly off):

Rip means simply to copy the files to your hard drive from the disk. Some apps decrypt -- remove copy protection -- at the same time.
Encoding is changing something about the file in the process of creating a new one -- most often the codec, container, raster size, bitrate, color space etc. Shrinking requires encoding, but encoding is a broader term.

Thank you, smrpix, for that clarification. So Makemkv will rip it to the hard drive and decode it at the same time, correct? Handbrake will shrink the file to fit the disc, although it will also do a lot of other things as well, correct?

So really all I need to burn a copy of my personal disc (DVD only, not Blu-ray) is Makemkv, Handbrake, and Imgburn, correct? If this is incorrect then what is it that I need for regular DVD's?

For burning Blu-ray discs I would need, DVDFab (free version will work?), Shrink or Handbrake, and Imgburn, is this correct? If not please tell me what I need for Blu-ray? Thanks so much to everyone for your patience and suggestions, I really really appreciate it. Have a wonderful day everyone.
    Thank You,

Copying your DVD can be done in a number of different ways. It depends on what you want as output. MakeMKV can decrypt and rip DVD's to the hard drive for you, but will do so only in MKV format, without changing the video codecs used, or compressing it. Handbrake will re-encode whatever you give it as input, but will only output in MKV or MP4 formats. If you want to retain DVD-video format, neither of these are optimal.
Since you've already mentioned it, DVDShrink is one program that can decrypt, rip and compress DVD's and keep them in DVD-video format, but its decryption capabilities are limited.

If your target is MP4, or MKV, then yes, MakeMKV + Handbrake (or VidCoder) would be fine.

For Blu-ray, you need to decrypt first. I'd use AnyDVD HD or MakeMKV. MakeMKV can decrypt and rip as a main movie only MKV file, or in Backup mode, it can rip the entire Blu-ray movie to the hard drive. Once decrypted, you use BD Rebuilder if you want a smaller sized Blu-ray output, or one of the other programs, like VidCoder or Handbrake to make MP4 or MKV files. Burning either type of output should be done with ImgBurn. DVDFab isn't necessary at all.

  10. MakeMKV decrypts and copies the files from the disk and re-wraps the contents into an MKV container without re-encoding. Handbrake has a number of options, but it can "shrink" the files.

Neither of these methods produce files that can be burned to disk and played as normal DVDs. For that you must re-author -- create a standard DVD or Blu Ray structure with properly encoded files. AVStoDVD is a good free authoring program for DVD. I have not found a free program I like for Blu Ray so others may have suggestions, I use Encore.

Use DVDFab to copy your disks as .iso then use the iso in DVDShrink to make it smaller and DVD legal.

Thank you Kerry56. I don't think MakeMKV is going to be for me, reason being is that I want the finished product to be able to be played in my settop DVD player such as my Oppo BDP-103.

For backing up regular DVD's it sounds like I should use DVDShrink (is this the same thing as the old Shrink?) to rip, decrypt and shrink and Imgburn to burn. If Shrink won't work on certain discs then I could use DVDFab (free version) to rip, decrypt and Shrink or BDRebuilder to shrink, and Imgburn to burn. Does this sound right?

For backing up blu-rays I should use DVDFab for ripping, and decrypting, BDRebuilder for shrinking, and Imgburn for burning, does this sound right?

DVDShrink is one option, but it will fail to decrypt some discs. The commercial version of DVDFab is another choice if you want the entire movie, menus and all, compressed to fit single layer discs. You can also use other decrypters, like the TDMore Free DVD program to get the whole movie to the hard drive, then compress with something else.

I stopped using DVDShrink a long time ago, and went to DVD Rebuilder, since it gives higher quality output, but it does not decrypt anything. There is a free version of DVD Rebuilder available.

I don't like DVDFab for much of anything, and I'd still recommend MakeMKV over it most of the time for decryption of Blu-ray. MakeMKV can decrypt a Blu-ray in original format if you use it in Backup Mode. Put your Blu-ray in your drive, let MakeMKV find it, then click on File-->Backup. Then compress with BD Rebuilder and burn with ImgBurn.

Thanks again Kerry56. I get what you are saying, I think. I really won't know until I try burning a disc. I am having a real problem understanding how to download BDRebuilder, it is a pain in the you know what if it is not a simple straight forward download which BDRebuilder is NOT. I am going to read the "read me text" to see if I can figure it out. Thanks again for all your help.
    Thank You,
