I'm new to video editing and I don't even know which video or audio codecs to choose for creating a DVD. I'm using Open Shot in my Linux Mint 17 . Could some one please fill me in on this simple question. I've looked all over the place and don't find a direct answer. . I've tried with mpeg2 and ac3 so far but every time I export it gets to the end and says it's completed but then Open Shot hangs and I have to force close the exporter . If it even created a file there is nothing there. I'm not sure the path to Blender is right and I've seen documentation that makes me think this might be a problem also ; but I'm not good enough yet with Linux to fix it . Any suggestions would be very welcome. thank you

I'm also running Linux Mint 17.1 on a couple of PC's. To be honest, I never tried to Author a dvd in Linux, in fact it's been years since I've Authored any dvd's at all for that matter. all dvd's require Mpeg-2 video and ac3 (NTSC) audio for compliance. It's best to set GOP at 15 for 29.97 fps and 12 for 23.976 fps.

Sorry that I can't help any more than that, but dvd's are ancient history for me and I really don't care much about them anymore.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

AC3 is the most common type of audio on DVDs, even if it is not the only choice available. The DVD spec requires one audio track to be AC-3 or PCM for NTSC DVDs. MPEG-1 Layer II audio is also allowed by the DVD spec, although not as the only audio track for NTSC DVDs, but some DVD players and authoring software don't care if it is the only audio track provided.

DVDStyler (DVD authoring software) has a Linux version. It can convert some kinds of audio and video for DVD compliancy as well as author DVDs.

Yes , thank you all. Please keep replying with these pieces of info .
I have DVDStyler too . I think Open Shot is user friendliest/easiest for me to navigate and figure out. Now that you mention it I'm gonna go back and check out Styler again.
I think I'll have to go to the Blender and Open Shot forums too. Since I had the codecs right I don't know why it fails. More research.
