I used to use BSPlayer for video playback, and while I hated a lot of things about it (compatibility and performance most of all), I really loved that it would automatically poll a few websites to find subtitles for the video I was watching based on its name. Is there a way to make PotPlayer do this?

+ Added support for Open Subtitles DataBase (OSDb) to directly download or search for subtitles online

I now see that subtiles download was implemented in PotPlayer, but Opensubtitles.org wasn't included as a default location. How can I do that? I suppose just adding www.opensubtitles.org wont't do the trick.

Even though it's been a while since Bipbip asked this question, I just stumbled upon it, got it to work and wanted to share it with anyone it could be helpful for.
In Potplayer goto the menu; Subtitles/Online Subtitles Searching/Subtitles Search Settings. Click on Add and fill in:
Title : Opensubtitles.org [or whatever you want]
Content :Code:http://www.opensubtitles.org/en/search2/sublanguageid-eng/moviename-%%SS
Select the new made Opensubtitles.org in the list and press the Up button until it's on top - this will make it the default one.
Now you can use the function Search for subtitles on OSDb... which will open the site in the webbrowser you have configured under Subtitles/Online Subtitles Searching/Subtitles Search Settings/Browser.
Or, even better, you can chose Download subtitles from OSDb... which will open a Potplayer dialogue with a list of all the subtitles it could extract from the site. From there you can Load, Download, etc. the subtitle you think fits the movie.
You can try to make it work with any other subtitle search sites you know. To take Opensubtitles.org as an example, I just went to the website, typed a word in the search box and pressed search. I then copied the resulting URL, replacing the name of the movie with %%SS and used that in Potplayer. -
Hi everyone!
Sorry for the gravedigging, but I need a clarification on this.
So, I've just downloaded PotPlayer and lovin' it, the only problem is with subtitles (I watch a lot of series and, not being a native speaker, I always use ENG subs).
Now, two questions:
1) I think after Vidx post there was an update which implemented OpenSubs as the default search engine, so the previous tutorial is not necessary anymore. Am I correct?
2) A part from not particularly loving OpenSubtitles (I strongly prefer addic7ed.com, but I can't figure out the way to use it instead of OS) I'm having some troubles. I tried it with a famous movie, and it worked smoothly: found 8 different ENG .srt files, every one of them was working ok.
But when I opened an old episode of of a TV show, it showed me like 10 different files, only one in English and 9 in different languages (which I have no use for, but couldn't find a setting to just search ENG subs), and the ENG one was for Hearing Impared people (which was not specified in the name of the file, but I think this is an Open Subtitles issue).
Any suggestions?
Thank you!
