Best File Format For DVD?

I've got a bunch of videos that I'm attempting to burn to separate DVD's, my question is what is the best format to have the video in when i go ahead a burn the DVDs. Currently the files are in .WMV, MPEG, and .AVI

DVD is MPEG2. DVD isn't anything else. PAL & NTSC requirements: https://www.videohelp.com/dvd#tech

WMV and AVI are containers, not formats. They could have been encoded using any number of different codecs. They would have to be decoded/reencoded to MPEG2 for DVD.

Well, if you want to burn a standard video DVD you have no other choice than to convert them to MPEG-2 interlaced (or MPEG-1) at either 29.97 or 25 frames per second. You can also set a bunch of flags helping the decoder including one that allows you to pack a widescreen video in anamorphic format.

If you need a program to make DVD-video from your various files, I'd suggest AVStoDVD. Use the HC encoder that comes with it. I always use a two pass encode in this program.

AVStoDVD will allow you to make DVD-video with a menu, or without.

I currently use ConvertXtoDVD 5 for smaller created photo slideshows that are saved as .WMV's usually and the quality is really very good. I will have to check but I believe my files are saved as MPEG's already, if not I will convert and for sure try out AVStoDVD

As Kerry56 has said, AVStoDVD will author the DVD for you and do the conversion, if needed, using the excellent HC encoder, contained within it.
AVStoDVD is a freeware program and most here would recommend it.

When you author to DVD, your software will convert your files into MPEG2 so you want your source files to be as high quality as possible before the conversion takes place. I tend to convert my files to the highest possible h.264 before adding them in toast to burn to DVD.

Bad advice. Converting to h.264 before converting to DVD cannot improve quality. At best it will reduce the quality very slightly.

If Toast can't do a decent conversion from the original format to DVD, I suggest using DVDStyler to convert directly from the original format to DVD. Just use Toast to burn.
