How to burn .avi files to DVD in high quality?

I have 6 .avi files that I'd like to burn to DVD. They are good quality videos, with no pixelation really.

When I burnt them to a DVD in Roxio Toast 12 on my mac, the quality is really bad on playback and really pixelated. The videos are about 45 mins long.

Any ideas on how I can make it so they they remain as good quality? All the settings in Toast are to 'best'.

Are you adding all 6 files on one dvdr? 4.5 hours/DVD wont look that good. Try instead with 2/hours dvd.

It's because dvd-video uses mpeg2 video compression and your avi uses xvid/divx or h264 video that compresses better than mpeg2.

Ah! Thanks very much. Would it help if I converted from .avi to .mp4 (or another format) before burning? I'd like as many files as possible on one DVDR but still in "good" quality.

DVD can only be MPEG2.
Your "good quality" looking AVI files go directly out the window because you need to re-encode them back to MPEG2
AND I can say with almost absolute certainty that your AVI files are downsized(smaller than 720x480 or 720 x 576)....making
re-encoding back to MPEG2/DVD even worse.

Long story short, if these files are movies or 1 hour TV shows, 6 of them is NOT gonna make it and if you do find software to stuff
all of that on there it WILL look like crap.

If they are good quality why mess with them? How do you view those videos?

Do you have one of those bleeding edge new TVs that have an HDMI input?
If so, hook it up to a computer and play the good quality avi's!
