Burned VCDs won't play on some players....

I've just recently gotten into burning vcds, and I want to make some for a couple family members, but it seems like their players just won't take the cds. They are both supposed to be capable of playing vcds, but they won't recognize the disc in the drive. I want to know if it's just that the players won't accept burned discs at all, or if it is something that I'm doing wrong.

The last thing I tried was to simply encode a standard vcd, no custom settings (except to the aspect ratio which before was being vertically stretched on the dvd player. Nero didn't give me any messages like it would with xvcds, so I assume that's not the problem), and burned onto Memorex 80min CD-Rs at 4x (as slow as I can burn them). It plays fine on my panasonic (actually, just about everything does), but my mom's sony and my uncle's hitachi won't recognize the disc. As far as I can figure, there's only 2 possibilites. One is that I need to use a different kind of cd, and the other is that it's hopeless. I'm hoping someone here can give me a little insight. Thanks

Different brands of disks are worth a try, but first look up those other players and check out the user feedback:
