  1. I'm using the Hauppauge HD PVR 4900 series (1228) to capture video off the sky box (works great BTW) using the Arcsoft's capture software that came with the Hauppauge V3.1. While using this sw I see the video standard under the video decoder tab always stays at the first 1 which is NTSC M however I'm pretty sure I have a PAL signal coming in. Is there a way to tell which sort of signal is coming in so you can select the right one to capture with as there are a load of options to selct in that menu ?

If you are using ArcSoft ShowBiz to capture, then try this. Start it up and go into Capture then go to Device Settings. Under Video Decoder there is a Video Standard setting where you can change the input to various PAL or even SECAM settings from the default of NTSC_M.

  3. Generally, if the software is set up for the wrong system you don't get any captures or you get caps with a rolling picture and other sync problems. What are the properties of your captured files?

Would help to know where you are based. Sky have transmissions in the UK and elsewhere but all AFAIK are PAL.

But Hauppuage can play funny tricks or so I found. I have a really old WinTv PCI card. When I first installed it and the WinTv software it actually captured mpeg as NTSC despite the PAL signal coming in. Go figure that one. The anomoly was solved by applying a channel rather than the direct composite stream.
