  1. Hey everyone. I'm James and am new to the board. My username says it all--that is, I'm not completely disinclined in this arena (DVD authoring, ripping etc.), although even that could be an over statement, and needless to say have A LOT to learn. This site is awesome so I finally decided to join after sifting though the forums for months.

    So, to my problem;

I am using DVDFab 8.1.5.9 to rip standard DVD's to my HD. A lot of movies (and I know this is a popular topic on the forums) are not in sync. The thing is, it's always the same: they seem to start off with both Video & Audio on point for the most part, then by the end of the movie it's pretty (if not very) off kilter.

I've read though some of the posts on this but I really need detailed instructions on how to fix this issue (sorry to be annoying). I would be really grateful if someone could help me.

It probably does this w/ about 40 to 50 percent of the movies I rip

Any help could be greatly appreciated. The more detailed, the better.

    THANKS GUYS!

    Ripping or converting(to avi/xvid/dixv/h264)?

I think that, like many inexperienced users, you are ripping and reencoding to some other format, though you didn't say what. If you had just ripped the dvd you'd end up with a video_ts folder the same size as the video on dvd, and you probably wouldn't have sync problems unless your software or hardware couldn't keep up with the playback.

You should probably specify what you output format is.

That said, I've used dvdfab hd decrypter to rip dvds many times. It's the free part. But I wouldn't use the encoder, period. It's not that good. Try handbrake or vidcoder, which are really the same thing with different interfaces. I like handbrake personally. It's pretty powerful and you don't have to be a hard core video geek to use it. Just remember to use high profile and turn on 8x8 DCT.

  4. Hey thanks for the responses; sorry I forgot to give more detail.

I am pretty familiar with DVDFab. Simply put, I am using DVDFab to turn (or convert) the main title track (the movie) into an avi-H264 and for audio, selecting either MP3 or audiocopy (One Pass)----- I insert disc, fab finds the movie track, then, under profile, it reads ["Profile: generic.avi.h264.mp3 *(or audiocopy)"]----- (but whichever I choose, neither seem to work audio-wise with certain movies).

This is usually a pretty simple process (what I've described above) and there is rarely any problems.

For instance, one or two dvd's sync perfectly, then a third will start off with the audio on point and start to go astray about halfway though, and by the end, way out of whack.

To clarify again, I AM ALMOST ALWAYS RIPPING TO .AVI FORMAT.

    Thanks.

  5. Do it like this, only use DVDfab to copy movie to hard drive.
In your case I would suppose you only want movie so you can select "main movie".
Then after you get that on your hard drive, use another converter, other than dvdfab to convert.
Since I don't fool with AVI, someone else can advise you on that.

Do not try to copy and convert in the same step in order to avoid sync problems or other screwed up results.

  6. Alright, thanks I'll see if that works; but could you explain a bit more on how use DVDFab to JUST copy DVD to my HD--- assuming you mean all the VOB files etc. Also, could you gimme some ideas on other (pref. free ) converters which will convert all the VOB stuff. An earlier poster suggested Handbrake but will that convert all the vob's etc. (incl audio) to .AVI or MKV?

You shouldn't put h.264 video in a .avi container. It doesn't support all the features of the h.264 codec. The encoder may let you do that but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

One pass encoding isn't a good idea either unless you're using what's called crf mode, which I don't think you're using. You can't get good quality with one pass target bit rate or file size, and it could definitely be causing sync problems too.

Handbrake will convert to mkv or mp4, and with h.264 video that is what you want. Vidcoder uses the same encoder but has a different interface. It's oriented more towards encoding dvd rips so may be better for you.

I don't remember the exact procedure in dvdfab for ripping to hd ... frankly, I only used the free part (dvdfab hd decrypter) because, to be honest it's the only part that's any good. But you should just be able to set the output to dvd-9. Isn't there help in the program or on their site?

  8. Thanks Rob. Been busy so haven't had time to check the boards or respond in a couple of days.

OK so what I'll try to do 1st is use h.264 with a .MKV container and to 2 pass. I'll try to convert a DVD straightaway like I usually do in Fab but with those settings.

If that doesn't work I'll try ripping the actual DVD to my HD and then using Handbrake or the likes.

The only question I have now is, if I can't, for some reason, rip the DVD to the hd with Fab, than can u please name another or some other program(s) that will do it AND also decrypt it (the more straightforward/intuitive--and free --the better)?

One more thing: Rip (or ripping) refers to copying the actual files on the DVD itself (i.e. the .VOB's etc) into a folder on the HD. Is that correct?

I mean to say, I guess I probably had converting confused with ripping b/c fab, with all its drawbacks considered, makes it REALLY simple for someone who's new to this sort of thing. That's really the only reason I like it so much. But I would assume it (fab) had to rip it and then convert it, just all in one process; so I didn't see the difference between the two.

I really prefer a program that is reliable and just makes conversion easy and decrypts. Like the second program u mentioned u said works more with rips but I just want to convert a DVD to a video file, be it MKV, AVI etc. doesn't really matter. Don't get me wrong, I do want to use a container that has good quality when you watch it.

I truly appreciate all the help from you thus far--many thanks.

Also, thanks for your advice Steve, I'll try that too

  9. Reread my post, you do not want a program to rip and convert at the same time, why can't you follow my post.
Select "main movie" then select next or whatever it says at at the bottom.
Copy it to hard drive, then use vidcoder or handbrake to convert to MKV.

  10. My man, I totally follow your post; but perhaps you did not read my questions.

I have THE FULL VERSION OF DVD FAB. As I write this, I am looking at it. The program loads, then there are 9 sections to choose from on the left.

    1. DVD Copy
    2. *DVD Ripper* (which is what I use, I choose AVI format and then it goes to work, thus converting, BUT it's under the DVD Ripper section and you can only choose a format, there is NO OPTION to take the contents (.VOB, .IFO files) and "Rip" them to my hard drive. As I said, there are only formats from which you can choose. So, it gives you no choice but to "Convert" DVD straight into some format, be it AVI, MKV, MP4 etc. There is also a choice under this section which is to convert the file into a .VOB (perhaps that's what I need to do)
    3.BR (blu-ray) Copy
    4.BR Ripper
    5.BR 3D Rip.
    6.BR to DVD
    7. Video Converter
    8. DVD Creator
    9. BR Creator

You Wrote: [Select "main movie" then select next or whatever it says at at the bottom.]

    You mean this screen: https://forum.videohelp.com/images/guides/365611/dvdfabdecrypter1.gif

That doesn't come up anymore once the full version is activated, so is there another software that is free or cheap an will Rip (and decrypt) the DVD to yield AUDIO_TS AND VIDEO_TS folders. I cant find the option to just
    decrypt.

    DVDFab's definition is WRONG.
A "rip" of a DVD is an exact copy of the DVD placed onto your HDD.....NO RECOMPRESSION. That can also mean the movie only....exactly as it is on the DVD....full quality - no recompression/conversion.

    Correct description of "rip":

  12. OK is there any other free software you know of that will decrypt ans rip the dvd so I can then use handbreak to convert?

  13. STEVE, NEVERMIND MAN...I found where the decrypter is in FAB so NOW I SEE MAIN MOVIE like you were tailking about and next at the bottom. I feel like a retard but thanks. It was under the DVD COPY section.

    Hech, thanks as well.

  14. It appears you found the correct one....
Yes, it would be under "DVD copy".
    Then select "Main Movie"
You will need to select a place to store on your hard drive the file (at top) "Target".

Some of us can help you with Vidcoder or Handbrake....

You may also want to look into removing unwanted stuff from the main movie as well....unwanted audio and subtitles etc etc.
