Perhaps you enabled the 48kHz to 44100kHz downsample in dvd2avi. It is extremely slow at this, I'd recommend not using it and doing the downsample in another program. Perhaps you weren't doing the surround sound downmix, though if you choose to use dvd2avi for audio then this is something I would definitely recommend leaving checked.

Maybe you have pre-scale decision checked. This scans through the audio before extracting it so it adds quite a bit of time.

You may wish to simply not use dvd2avi for audio decoding since there are other methods which maybe higher quality and which are definitely faster. I always set dvd2avi to demux all tracks instead of decode and then I use BeSweet gui to process my audio. In any case ensure that you are either using 1.76 or the very newest version of dvd2avi, all others are seriously flawed.

As for your dvd-rom, make sure that DMA access is enabled. It was probably turned off when you re-installed your OS. Look in control panel/system/hardware/device manager/ and find your IDE controller and look at its properties. It will depend on your OS but under transfer mode set it to DMA or "DMA if available."
