I was playing around with microsoft expression encoder 4 screen capture and the problem is that it producess huge files. On a 15 sec screen capture of a video it produces a 17MB file. The trouble is when I select lower bitrate like 500kbps the video is choppy and unwatchable. But I have to select 30000kbps for it to produce a smooth video. Is there a work around for this?
btw I posted this on microsoft forums and haven't received an answer so far in a couple days.

What is your video source? Does it happen with all kind of video you try?
Are you converting to wmv3 or vc1?
 Frame rate, frame size/resolution?

It can be related that for lower bitrates usually MS codecs (all except VC1 i think) can reduce number of frames - instead MS encoder use something else for example x264 in MP4 (or similar) container.

When I encode it back it reduces the file size but still the beginning few seconds are paused and audio is a little bit ouf of sync.

My suggestion: use a screen capture program that saves the results to an AVI file, not to WMV(=ASF).

ASF files often have Variable Frame Rate video and Variable Frame Duration audio, which are a royal PITA to convert without sync issues.

Don't know about Microsoft Express Encoder
but I using Camtasia Studio and result are great
Camtasia Studio also have encoder to mp4
